Title: Added holes in the muffler.
Post by: terry1013 on March 26, 2005, 03:44:20 PM
New to the GS I was just ok with the sound of this bike. Been working on this thing for a couple weeks and every time I felt I couldn't hear or feel the engine as I have on other bikes. I didn't want a straight pipe sound and I don't want to pay for the fancy slip ons or equivilants so I read through all the posts on drilling holes and decided to try it. I can remember dad years ago knocking out the baffles in his old honda with a punch & hammer. Didn't want to whack away at this bike and am concerned about losing valuable back pressure so I started by drilling 2 5/16 holes in the baffle. This created a phhht phhht sound that resembled a muffler with a hole drilled in it, not what I wanted. But I could also hear the beginning of a suzuki purr hidden in there under the sound. I drilled 1 more. Getting better, No rumble by any means just a better presence of the sound of power. I ended up with a pattern of 8 5/16 holes that produce a nice purr. Not obnoxious enough to rouse the neighbors but it now has "presence". At 6K RPM it sounds perfect to me. I can now hear the engine better but I'm not blasting a concussion barrage out the back of my bike. This is just what I wanted and am very happy with it.

I was thinking of doing the same. Can you take a picture of your mod, and even a sound clip? thanks, you would be helping me out.

Does anybody know if drilling holes in the muffler affects the performance of the bike besides sound? :dunno:

Bluebelly, I have noticed no real difference in performance only a better sound to judge my engine by.

I think you might maybe lose a little power but not a whole lot, I could notice a little difference between my stock and drilled pipe when I swapped them out.
