Title: Help! Can't get Neutral light or into 1st gear :(
Post by: mattford11 on March 27, 2005, 09:03:17 PM
Hey folks.

I went to move my bike this morning, I uncovered it, turned it on, engaged the clutch and attempted to shift into neutral. I found i was unable to get the neutral light to come on, and i heard 2 short noises like the chain rubbing against medal. Also, i am unable to get into 1st gear, i can only get to gears below Neutral.

Thoughts?

Matt

Just a thought, but did you trying pushing it forward/backward to get stuff lined up.  Sometimes mine won't go into first, but if I move it forward or backward it will go right in.

Are you sure it is not going into neutral?  Light could be busted.

Adjust clutch cable?  I'm not sure how much, but you should have a little freeplay in the clutch lever.  Maybe nut fully disengaged.

These trannies also have a habit of acting up with low or poor oil.  When was the last oil change and is the level on dipstick between marks with bike on centerstand.

check the easy stuff first before you start to prepare for the worst.

Good Luck

I will check the oil out in the morning.

My bike is a 2004 F and only has 900 miles on it. Its due to go in next week for service.

I was able to ride around my apartment complex, but i had to start in 2nd. I know its not the clutch lever, because i am able to change gears w/o issue...

any more ideas?

The given advice [rolling the rear wheel] applies to you're circumstance, which is downshifting with the engine off.

Isn't it still under warranty.  Take it to the stealership.  Let them deal with it.
