Title: What would you buy. . .
Post by: Jake D on March 29, 2005, 09:24:48 AM
Would you buy a 1998 CBR 600 for $3800.  Low miles, slip on, perfect in every respect.

Or would you buy a 2003 GSX-R 600 with 1200 miles that had been dropped once and had a dent in the gas tank.

Just curious.

how much for the gsx-r? don't tell me it's $3800 too.
I've seen a 2004 gixxer for $6700 so.. what's the owner asking for the 2003 gixxer?

Neither....I don't like 600's

but I would buy a clean bike before a damaged one, unless it was heading for the track and the price was right.

Dang.  Forgot to mention the price of the GSX-R.

It is $5000 for the GSX-R, $3800 for the CBR.

Upside on the CBR: perfect, cheaper, and I wouldn't get to ride it until May (when it would be delivered by my brother from the East Coast).  This is a good thing so I'd have some time to get better at riding first.

Upside on the GSX-R: ummmm. . . It is black and yellow!  Very low miles.  For sale by someone I know.   Located in the Mid-west (where I am).

I'd doubt I'll ever have either one on a track.

Just curious: why don't you like 600's?

They rev too quick and you have to shift a lot. No power until in the upper rpm range. I have got used to the low end torque of a big bore twin, power whenever I want it.

I'd get the CBR because I'm cheap and you could get a lot for the leftover 1200- buy a bunch of track days for example or even buy a second GS for the track.  However, if you can find an undamaged tank or repair the suzuki to bring it to new, that is a sweet deal.  I wouldn't get the damaged one unless I could  make it look new again, though.

The guy that is selling the GSX-R dropped it loading it onto a trailer.  There is no fairing damage, just the tank.  That sucks but it isn't that big of a deal.  But it is a lot more money. . .

Guys that have riden these 600's. . .now, I've sat on a few and fet pretty comfortable, but I am 6'2" and about 220 lbs.

Am I too big for these bikes?

I am TOTALLY unbiased when I say get the CBR...

better bike. easier to ride, more stable overall. better choice if its your first sportbike. might be cheaper to insure too. money left over for trackday(s).

The Honduh would be great for learning how to ride on the track.  The Gixxer is newer.....hmmm.

The Honda has very low miles and it has been pampered.  They guy has taken great care of it.  We'll see.  I don't  think either bike will sell soon.  Neither seller is looking very hard to sell.  But the prices are great.

Maybe I should re-assemble the motor on my GS and ride it for a while longer.  Maybe justify the $300 I just spent on parts.

Very tempting.

They are just so damn pretty. . .

Another vote for the CBR.
Make me an offer.  I live in Raleigh and have family in KC.  I can ride it there in 2 days.

Having been for a ride on neither one I couldn't make a recommendation. From what I have read I believe I would want the GSX...if I liked that kind of bike. I know it's neither here nor there but if I had 4-5 grand to plunk down I would get me a Sportster or an older Glide. But that's just the kind of riding I like to do. I would never be able to ride a CBR or GSX the way they were intended. In fact I would probably wind up in the news...as a statistic   . Good luck on the choices and please be safe whichever way you go. We're getting kind of fond of you. Love the Baby GS and this forum.

Thanks.  I'm fond of too!

We shall see. . . what to do. . .

I just love making cool decisions like this.
