ok i know this is a dumb question probably...my excuse is that i am new to bikes
i was checking out the 05 gs and when i looked at the VIN etc I saw that it was made in Spain
is this correct? i thought the bike was made in japan or something
assembled in Spain now, you would be correct.
A recent magazine test reported that the GS500s are now assembled in Spain. Europe is probably their largest market for such a pratical bike.
I wondered why the Baby G always seemed to whisper to me "Te Amo" evey time I hugged her...now I know. I love that little vertical twin and this forum.

Funny you ask ... I was just surprised to see on my 89 that the bottons under the seat said "Made in japan" ... maybe first few years were Jap ...
Cool.
Srinath.
I remember hearing that they moved all the assembly to spain when they started making the Fs.
and I thought that the stork brought them to the dealer....
My understanding was that until the 2002 model year they were all sourced out of Japan. (I know that at least they were 'til Nov'00.)
Rumor has it that the missing 2003 model year was due to a "not entirely successful" startup of the Spanish assembly line. (Perhaps it was a "New Coke" versus "Classic Coke" thing.) Only the unfaired GS500E was available in countries other than the U.S. All was right again by the 2004 rollout.
The 17 digit VIN began in 1981 and continues to present.
Understanding your vehicles serial (VIN) number
1st character- Identifies the country in which the vehicle was manufactured.
For example: U.S.A.(1or4), Canada(2), Mexico(3), Japan(J), Korea(K), England(S), Germany(W), Italy(Z)
( ? ) spain ???? :dunno:

When I huge my GS and tell her I love her, she says to me,
"What the hell are you doing in the bathroom all day and night?! Why don't you get out of there and give someone else a chance?!" Oh how I love that little bike.
Yeh, and turn on the fan when you leave!!  . We must be crazy to love the little twin like we do...but it's all good. Lovin' the forum too.

I have a 2002 and I'm happy to say my Japanese bike was built in Japan
My '03 says it's Nipponese but lots of bikes get built in Europe, most Hondas, if not all, that are available here are built in Italy, I think they only make 250cc and 400cc for the domestic market in Japan. Small bikes in Brazil and probably somewhere in India or S.E. Asia in whatever country is tooling to do to China one day what China is doing right now to the rest of the world.
