Title: "Stolen??"
Post by: JetSwing on April 03, 2005, 11:49:45 AM
i had thought as i looked out the window and couldn't locate my gs...:?

i have checked up on it eariler this morning, it was there then. damn...i don't have a full coverage. if it's been stolen, that would suck pretty bad. i guess i have to call the police and report a stolen bike. :(

but...i just can't believe someone would steal something like a bike in my neighborhood!! looks like they even took my bike cover! bastards! geez...i even took the battery out since the temperature was going drop last night. what am i going to do with my stupid battery NOW?!? :x

o...k...take a deep breathe and let go out and check out the scene of the crime....damn, it's sooo windy outside. i better put on a thick jacket or else i freeze my butt off.

i bundle up and walk outside. as i walk closer to parking space where once my bike stood, all i see is a white pickup truck....

my baby is gone...

wait... :?

could that be....:o

...my bike...?

behind the pickup was my baby down on the chilly concrete bleeding gasoline. and finally it had dawned on me....cover + wind! :x

my gs is perfect no more... :(

from the initial look, there was about $200 worth of damage. the damaged parts are the right side engine cover, right side barend, barend mirror, and exhaust. i'm not sure if there's any internal damages.

this is something that was totally unexpected...i took the cover off and put her on the center stand. but there's no guarantee that she'll stay upright. :dunno:

The way I always park is with the kickstand "downwind".  By this I mean that when you park the wind should be blowing against your right shoulder when sitting on the bike.  I know this isn't possible all the time but it sure helps.

Also the centerstand is less stable than the sidestand.  Try it.  put your bike on center stand and see how much force it takes to "wobble" the bike.  Now put it on side stand and it takes alot more force.

Sorry man.

that sucks dude, look on ebay you can get a lot of those for cheap. i only use the centerstand for working on my bike. it is wayyyy to unstable for parking.

I used to worry all the time about my bike tipping in the wind, cause it was so upright on the side stand.
After I put the Katana shock on it, the side stand allowed it to lean a bit more, it seems much more stable now. :thumb:

Sorry to hear about your bike, sucks it happens just when riding weather gets nice again.

I can share your pain.  I had a PVC cover stretched taut over my bike (it was barely big enough to fit) and my bike blew over in short order.  Ever since I got a looser cover for it, though, it seems to not catch the wind as much.

Sorry to hear about that. I usually leave my bike covered on its centerstand but the cover is pretty loose and on windy days, it will come off.

I had thought about tieng it on, but I think I can live with the occasional game of "go fetch the cover".

I definitely feel your pain... the exact same thing happened to my bike this weekend.  I came back after going to the store and found the bike on its side.  Now my bike won't start.  I've got spark only to one side and I have to spend some time diagnosing the ignition system.  I had no idea that the wind was strong enough to take it down.  I went out today and bought a ratcheting cargo strap to keep it from tipping again!
