Title: CALLING THE ELECTRICAL GENIUSES PLEASE
Post by: josh28 on April 07, 2005, 01:24:23 PM
OK, IN LAYMAN'S TERMS,

GOT A NEW STARTER RELAY TODAY, I GET DASH LIGHTS FOR NEUTRAL AND      . NO LIGHTS OR TURN SIGNALS,ALSO WITH CENTER KICK DOWN, THE RUN BUTTON ON, THE KEY TO THE ON,AND I GET NOTHING TO TURN OVER. BATTERY IS AT 11.40 TURNED OFF, AND 11.34 WHEN TURNED ON.

ANY POSSABLE ANSWERS BEFORE I GO BUY SOMETHING NOT NEEDED!

ANY WAY TO TEST THE RECITIFIER,THE IGNITOR, AND THE COILS FOR PROPPER WORKING ORDER?

(THIS BIKE HAS BEEN SITTING UP FOR AT LEASET 2 YEARS THAT I KNOW OF.)

Battery may have voltage, but may have no amperage. Charge the battery, then test again, you should be reading 12 or more volts. With a battery that I'm guessing is more than 2yrs old, with that low of voltage readings, may need to be replaced. I'm not 100% sure, so if someone else will chime in, it would be greatly appreciated.

It doesn't take a genius to understand electricity...especially a GS circuit.

Before you go pulling RR's and other items, the battery MUST be above 12V as a general health indicator. Check the fluid levels and find a charger for M/C batteries (less than or equal to 2A charge max). 11Volts is pitiful and a sure sign either the battery is poor or your meter is poor.

Read through this thread here for some tips on the starter circuit.

Footnote: Voltage out of a battery does not mean a battery is good.

According to YUASA  (http://www.yuasabatteries.com/pdfs/TechMan.pdf)page 18 (page 20 of the PDF), "If the stabilized open circuit voltage is below 12.5 V the battery needs charging."

At 11.4 volts  that battery is fully drained.  Charge it up and make sure it holds 12.6 volts.  If it doesn't get a new battery.  No sense in looking for other problems when you don't even have enough power to check anything on the bike as it is.
