Title: carb advice needed
Post by: Church6360 on April 07, 2005, 05:20:14 PM
ok, the bike starts easily and idles well. when i had it apart i inspected the carbs as per the clymer instructions and found them in (i think) good shape all around.

the only change since when i put it down and now is that i put a k&n filter on it. it had NO filter before (cheap previous owner). so i would think having a filter would make it run better assuming stock jetting?

but now it runs like junk. at partial throttle it is best. and when reved up the rpms fall very slowly, thending to hang around 4k or so.

basically i am sad because it is not really fun or good to ride it in this condition.

What should i do? mail my carbs to srinath? take them apart again myself? or take it down to the local suzuki speed shop?

the speed shop is fun to go to (they had four stretched brag busa's ouside last time i was there) but i'm sure it is the most expensive option.

please help as i am carb-retarded

i don't know if this is the cause (i am also carb-retarded), but if you're using the k&n that goes in the stock airbox, make sure you're using the little restrictor plug (the rubber ring that makes intake smaller)... i don't know if it will fix your problem (probably not), but it should help

i am using a k&n pod type filter, not the oem replacement. what exactly do the restrictors do for the oem style drop in filter?

check for a vacuum leak.  you had the carbs out/apart? check the boots between the carbs and the motor, also check the tops of the carbs where that little o-ring fits in.. a vacuum leak in either place will cause that 'slow return, hang at 4k' problem and will let it run a bit lean.
Title: K&N

K&N pod type = far more flow than No filter wiht the airbox ...
You need 150 mians and 1 washer under needle as well as 40 pilots. With restricted airbox K&N ... use 125 mains, non restricted air box K&N 127.5's ...
Cool.

i see. so where would one go to find such main and pilot jets?
are they universial or carb spesific?
and if i put on a better flowing muffler (like a wiley co or somthing) what jets ect should i use?

thanks for all the help in working to cure my carb-retarded brain.

Check the phone book for local motorcycle accessory shops and call and ask them if they can order Sudco or Mikuni jets for Mikuni carburetors. You will need size 40 non-bleeder type pilot jets and size 150, large, round main jets. Washers you should be able to get at local hardware store, #4 washers, should be .5mm thick.

OK wait a sec ... Stock pipe and K&N pod ... you are screwed ... Too many people have not had that work right ... 150 mains for a slip on and K&N, and in theory for stock and K&N maybe 145 or 147.5 ... but no one has managed to get them done right ... Do slip on ... then 150 will work great with K&N ...
Jets ... I can send you ... main and pilot jets, bolts and washers ... all for $20 ... but you need to decide which way you're going ... stock airbox and paper filter = 125 mains ... Pod and slip on = 150.
Cool.

Srinath...Can I get some pilots and mains from you? I got stock exhaust and K&N lunchbox filter. Will that work, or do I really need the Wiley slip-on? I'm trying to put it off because I don't have access to a welder.

No welding needed ... my wiley co and flange is 3 mins with a $8 pipe cutter available at HD and then slip it on ... Stock pipe and Lunch box might be too far off to work right ... For jets send $21 to my paypal, and in the notes say what setup ... and an address ... I'll work on getting it out by tommorow ...
Cool.
