On a stock wheel?  Metzler ME55a Metronic 140-80-17.  It'll rub on the brake bar for a few miles but no biggie.  But it's purely cosmetic and the bike won't turn as well....or so I've heard...

You can run 150s on a Bandit 400 wheel.  Maybe bigger...but theres a little surgery involved with getting the wheel to fit.

This question really needs to be in the FAQ.

We are putting 130 front and a 150 rear (got it recommendated from a racer friend who use to race one).

Do some searching and youll find out that over the long haul a 150 is not the right choice on a stock rim, and a 130 on the front, no way that is happening, 120 maybe but its really tight from what Ive read.  Stick with stock infront, if you go bigger in back you need to upgrade your wheel, otherwise stock is the best choice.

ive run 150/60/17 on stock rear rim, it changes the profile abit giving you less of a contact patch but the stickyer rubber you can get in that size makes up for it. Dont look to get all the way over to the edge, it wont happen, if it does, let us know how much pollutants are in the soil sample you take :o

120 is about as far as i would push the stock front,as its pinching too, but not as bad as 130 would, the GSXR front rim is alittle wider and can handle 130 and some racers have used them with GSXR front ends.

stock rear GS rim is 3.50" wide
Bandit 400 rear is      4.00

89 GSXR 750 rear is  4.50 and about the limit for the GS swingarm

140/80/17, didnt rub anywhere for me but felt tall as hell

the 150/60/17 didnt rub but was very close on both sides

with the banit 400 rim i can run a 160/60/17 but had to make shims for axle, shim out the rear sproket and carrior, and Bend the brake stay arm for rear caliper, the chain just bumps the tire when its loose but nothing overly concerning, leaves a thin shiny patch on very edge of tire. but must admit, i like the feeling of that 160.

Metzler ME55a Metronic 140-80-17:
i've got a guy in toronto who'd give it to me installed and balanced for, after taxes, 232.52 CDN

seems like a good price,
but in terms of performance and look,
is it worth it?
is it that much wider than my stock tire
(i have an 04 F)
and is the contact patch that much bigger?

cheers,
joel

Metzler ME55a looks alot wider and is taller too.  The general consensus is that the stock sizes provide the best control.

jiggersplat:  i'm going to use my stock tire to learn how to burnout before i install the new one.  good luck on your search for a new stock tire

Dome:  thanks.  I totally respect your opinion and since you're saying yes, i'll probably end up gettin it.

cheers,
joel

Oh yeah, and as for the 120 on the front...  It fits fine, at least the Metzler ME33 Comp K does...no rubbing and at least 1/2" of learance everywhere.

I'll take some pics tonight with my old ME55a next to my 140-80 Metz M1 Sportech.  So hang in there and don't buy anything until you can actually see how much bigger it is.

don't think i can get it cheaper...haven't really looked into those tires though...why do you need such sticky ones?

so...what are you gonna use for front?...make sure it's as sticky or stickier than the rear...or else you'll be pushing the front...

Hi,
thanks for responding to my post for a
Metzler ME55a Metronic 140-80-17

you mentioned something about a discount for gta members

how much would it be?

thanks again

cheers,
joel

Hey Joel.
I offer a 20% discount to GTA members. Turn 2 is a track side business (rentals and racing) so the shop i work out of is at home, no need for a store front (just yet)

So 20% off $231 is $184.80, then taxes on top of that (i am a registered business and have a GST# and PST#). I do installs and balancing as well. $10 per tire if you bring me the wheel, or $20 if you bring me the bike and i have to take it off. So, lemme know!
