Title: pics of pressurized places to run oil inlet
Post by: 94gsrider on April 12, 2005, 10:30:53 AM
I know that I've asked this before...but I am getting reading to run my oil inlet line to my turbo.   I was told by a few that there is a pressurized bolt on the right side casing near the front engine mount.  As do not want to destroy my turbo experimenting with oil supply, I was wandering if anyone had any pics or more detailed description of where I could run the oil to the turbo from.  Oil return line is no problem at all, just curious about the oil inlet line.  Any help is appreciated, thanks-Bob

I don't have a pic, but there is a test port just beneath the right-side ignition cover that has a hex-head plug about 12mm IIRC. This is used to fit an oil pressure gage for checking actual oil pressure. I have no idea what the flow rate from this port is but it would seem to be a logical, easy, place to fit a supply line. Just look on the right side of the bike right below that cover and you will see a chromed hex plug. Just unscrew it and you will be able to screw a fitting right in. Hope this helps. Good luck on the project, sounds more interesting than the one I did...a hydraulic punch press. Love the Baby GS and this forum.

also you may want to somehow reduce the pressure from port.. so that the oil pump is 'overworking' itself trying to supply all that oil through there

Thanks for the advice cernunos!

Did you have a turbo project as well?  Also-I see you worked as an automotive engineer, that is what I am trying to get into right now!  Any leads?

Take a look at Bob B's masterpiece of an engine in the wall of fame, its in the new gallery.  You can see in one of the pics where he ran a line out of the clutch cover, this I believe is what your looking to do.

Get your brief circulating amongst the head-hunters and a job in automotive engineering WILL turn up. There are a LOT of jobs in Texas doin' the Maquiladora thing...but I never was much into those...too much communication hassle. Tier 1 suppliers like Tryco, VDO and Teleflex are always hot...they're always looking for new blood with fresh ideas. If you want to get heavy into R&D then go looking at ANYPLACE in Troy Mi. Troy has always been THE hot-bed for automotive R&D. Roush used to have a lot of different development facilities up there. I will tell you that you've picked a career that has probably more different facets and possibilites than you could imagine. Product engineering is your best bet but if you have a really sharp imagination and good design skills then R&D is where it's at...they like people who are way out in left-field  :) . Love the little GS and this forum.

near the bottom edge of the clutch cover is a silver bolt, about sitting kinda between crank and CB shaft area. this is main oil galley, im not sure, but you may need to setup a reducer to keep oilpressure from hitting the basement, then, you might not the thing is, its fresh oil from filter not the grungy stuff from pan area. feed it through a cooler to turbo, or cooler after turbo.
