Title: Almost bought a 2005 SV650
Post by: jag69 on April 12, 2005, 03:25:05 PM
Well I almost bought a SV650 today.  My problem is that I change my mind every couple of days.   I see now that I won't be content with only one bike.

Came close to getting an SV650 when we got the White Owl. Blue '01 model, low miles and over-priced. But it was a nice bike. If I could go get me a new bike I'd like to have a new Superglide or if something sportier then an XB12 would be fine. But then I'd be happy if I could just go get the White Monkey. Love the Baby GS and this forum.

Motorcycles are crack man...I now have 4 in the garage.  3 streetbikes and one dirtbike.  I am selling the Kawasaki ZX6 soon to get a YZ125 dirtbike.  That will make a total of 6 bikes in the last 3 years.  The good thing is that if you go with used bikes instead of buying new, it's not all that hard to support more than one.  I haven't paid over 4K for any of them, and the latest addition (the GS) was $1300.  I got a Ninja 250 for my wife when she wanted to learn for $1000 and when she was ready to switch, I sold it for $1000.  See what I mean?  :thumb:

Hey,

I was maybe going to upgrade from my GSF to a SV since my sister wants to buy my bike off of me. What do you think, sv650s or 1000s? What i am scared off once again is getting to used to the power. Is there a big difference between the two? 350cc is the only difference. What do you guys think. I love the sound of the SVs compared to Inline 4s, so i would like one of them.

it's a lot more then just 350cc.....about 25 more horses.....bit more torque....added weight.....650 is more  "flickable".....I think the 1k would be better if you plan to do commuting....if you're doing mostly in town and curvy rides then the 650 will suit you better....

....other things to consider....about $300 year extra for ins. for hte 1k....also since it's more expensive annual reg. fees will be higher.....650 gets tons better gas mileage....and that's just off the top of my head....

I went from the GS500 to a TL1000.  Lots more power, but I just have to be responsible with it.  Gass mileage sucks though (31 mpg)  120 miles per tank.  The 1000 feels alot better to me.  More stable and better suspension.  Still fun in the twisties, but is a bit of a pig.  I was a little faster still on the GS through some of the more curvy rodes around here.  Glad I got the TL though and the GS is still hanging around in the garage.

I love my SV.  I bought her new in 03 for $6k out the door, but mine is a SVS, and not the standard SV.  The SV runs just a bit cheaper (around $500-$1000 less).  You will be amazed at the differnce.  I would wait and go with the fuel injected if you can find one (they run a lot smoother then the carberated ones).  You can usually find 03 SVS for about $4k and a SV for around $3500.

I almost bought an '05 SV the other day for $6,100.  Glad I didn't, now.  Those salesmen are good at their jobs.  I'm just a cheap ass.

Boomboom, do you have any picks of your SV?

I bought an 04 svs... I love it.

I had a 01 gs.  In the first six months that I owned it, I did a full V&H, K&N and rejet, I changed the gearing, advanced the timing, up'ed the front and rear suspension, and switched to radials (among other things).

In the 7 months I've owned the SV, I haven't changed a thing and it would kick my old gs's booty.  If you need more power than that on the street- you're probably breaking the law.

Yep sure do.  Will post them when I get home.  Here is where you can find one of the pictures, mine is the copper one with a white sticker on the wind screen.  The SV all the way on the end of the pictures of the bikes is my friend Q's bike (he is the one that helped me buy the GS for our friend).  Will all his aftermarket parts on the bike, he paid $3800 for it.  It came with an olins rear shock, 180 wheel, 520 kit, race tech forks, Vortex rear set, air box etc.

Got my 2004 SV650S out the door for 5900.  I also got the dealer to match the Oneida Suzuki online price for the lowers.  My total out the door was 6300 for the bike fully faired.

Little tiny pic.  Meighan, who used to post here, wrecked her GS and bought the same color SV you have.

Something about a girl on a sport bike. . . Really puts a hop in my step.

Great looking SV vtlion!

mastrind,

Do you know if the R6 tube will work with a 99-02?  I know an R1 tube will.  I've been contemplating that change myself since the SV will be my daily rider now that I am selling my ZX6.

I don't know anyone who has done so.  Then again, I have only seen one other SV around town in the last two years... this here is I-4 country... ha.

I'm really enjoying the SV and I haven't regretted buying it for a second.  I'm very slowly creeping up to a point where I might do something to the front to try and stiffen it up a bit... maybe just fork oil... maybe fork oil and new springs.. i haven't decided yet.

I'm also looking forward to getting some new rubber under her.  The stockers are wearing so slowly that I'm starting to feel like they will never be ready to replace.

The bike has turned out to be a perfect choice for me since I never get a chance to sportride through the hills anymore (blame school).  I log most of my saddle-time riding to and from school across town.  In that environment, the V-twin owns the road  ;)

hey.....you're just down the road from me.....ok it's a long road....or two....or three....well...we're in the same state anyways....

are you looking for risers??.....I just replaced the cover plate on my SV with an LSL plate and risers.....I've got a stock plate and risers for the 2nd gen SV that I was going to put on ebay.....they'll fit on the first gen, but you'll have to make a sleeve for the steering stem hole (1st gen steering stem is 7/8" while 2nd Gen is 1" in diameter)....drop me a pm.....

Okay just to throw something else into this mix of the SV love-in. I like the bike too but its not a comfortable riding position for me. Not that I rode one - only sat on one. However the Kanatuna err ahh Katana 750 is sooo comfortable (in the show room anyway). Does anybody know much about this bike? I'm starting to look around for an upgrade for next year. One of the colour schemes for Canada makes it look alot like a gixxer. A local dealer is selling a new 2005 for $1,500 CAD less than the MSRP.

Ya know, its just no fun riding into a head wind at highway speed when you have a helluva time keeping up with your buddies. repeating -at highway speeds - not warp speed! That was Saturday. The lack of HP in the GS does sometimes make itself very apparent. Not something you want when passing vehicles on the highway either. :o Been there done that too.

So just wondering.....thanks.

vtlion,

If you do nothing else, put 15W oil in the forks.  What a difference it made in my 01.  I was thinking of springs and emulators, but after the oil change I found that it was enough for me.  I guess it really depends on weight though.  I weigh about 162 and the frontend feels good with stock springs and 15W.  I am sure if I was taking it to the track I would want to set it up differently, but for the street it works like a champ.

Hopefully I'm going to be switching to a GSXR or 636 shock on the SV soon.  Over on SVrider, there's too much confusing info about which one to use though.  I gather that the 636 is probably to stiffly sprung for my weight.  So I'm thinking 750 or 1K shock might do the trick.  Other than that all I want to do to the SV to make it better is a slipon, some dual star grip heaters and maybe a rejet if needed.

Dandyd...Other than the jelly bean looks the 750 Kat is a good bike from all reports I've heard.  On the heavy side for a sportbike, however it makes a great sport tourer.  Comfy on the long rides with good wind protection.  A friend of mine had a 600 and I didn't like how narrow the windscreen was.  The engines are bulletproof and I believe there's quite a bit you can do to wake up the 750.

well...I had a kat 750 before my SV....it was nice....but I grew to hate the front of that bike.....the seating position of the SV can be changed rather easily and doesn't cost too much in the end (less then $100 if you do it right)....you can also pick of a gel seat for about $60...

....then if you're worried about the wind you can pick up full lowers for the SV for another $350US....

...the great things about the SV when compared to a Kat750 are:

I've wanted to step up to an SV650 as my second bike for a long time, but just happened to find a great deal on a used Triumph Speed 4.  I think the SV650 would be a perfect bike for around town and commuting, and I'll probably pick up a used one just for that purpose, and keep the S4 for weekends.

Kzin, Mastrind,
thanks for the great info on the Kat. All will help in finalizing my choice. Funny thing - talking to a co-worker today and he just happened to mention out of the blue that he really wants to get back into riding and that he is dreaming of a Katana - his favourite. Kinda weird timing huh? :?

Hopefully I can get out on a demo ride. Anyone think its kinda funny that there are no 'test rides' before buying a bike? Like I'm gonna drop 8-10 G's on an unknown. what can ya do?? :dunno:

Now to get to the garage and drop in my Progressive Springs the Pablo way. Wish me luck.... (hope I can do this- geeze)

Well actually being able to do my own hard, not owner's manual, break-in is a plus. But I'll see what I can do next year.

BTW the progressive install was a bust! I had the handle bars off, the fork caps off BUT the socket wrench I have is 3/8" not the 1/2" needed. Needless to stay I am  :x . Put the bars back on and was only able to do one productive thing - check the oil. That was good
Need to do some shopping (or borrowing  ;) ) real soon....

Good luck with the progressives.  I'm getting ready to do springs and seals on my wife's GS and I'm doing carbs at the same time so the bike's all in pieces in the basement.  She came down last night and asked if I was sure that I could get it all back together.  The look on her face was priceless  :?
