Title: using your reserve after running out of gas?
Post by: Susuki_Jah on April 13, 2005, 08:03:04 AM
ok ive run out of gas 4 times already and its really pissing me off. after getting the new front sprocket on i get a little less gas mielage , and I havnt been checking my fuel tank so much. So i will run out of gas on the freeway. my bike still has about a 1/4 or more of a tank left. so I switch the valve to point to reserve. but it doesnt work. what else should I be doing to get the reserve to work to get me to a gas station.

If the bike runs out of gas on "ON" and dies, then the carb float bowls are empty.  If you switch it to REServe, the float bowls are still empty, and it won't run.  You need to switch it to PRIme for 10 seconds, before REServe will work.  If you switch it to REServe while it is still running, then usually the bike will quit bucking/shuddering after about 5 or 10 seconds of riding (hang on!).

If that isn't the probelm, make sure your two hoses to the tank are not reversed, and that the reserve fuel hose isn't pinched under the tank (it should wiggle freely between the tank and the frame petcock.

I have a simple question....
Don't you know how many miles you can ride?

I'll add to the ribbing: do you use your tripmeter (provided it works)?

Now, I've ran out of gas three times. The second two were on purpose though.

Am I the only person who uses RES just about every time? I never fill up until I have to switch unless I'm on a road trip and don't know if there will be a station anywhere nearby... I thought that's what it was there for; kinda like the gas light on my truck.

before i got the new front 15t sprocket I used to beable to go 160miles before i would fill up. i dont really know how many miles I get out of it this time. ive been real busy and just havnt paid attention to what my gas mialege was and I always forget to use the trip at the gas station.

Switching it back and forth like that will eventually wear out the rubber seal in there... :dunno:  My commute is 100 miles each week so now I just fill up every Friday to displace the air in my tank (so it wont rust) in case I don't ride over the weekend (it happens :P ).

I use it every time.  Does it really wear out the rubber seal?  Some things wear out by not using them, so I figured using it might be good for the petcock. :dunno:
