Title: HELP!! Bike shut off (FIXED)
Post by: nemesis109 on April 16, 2005, 10:27:13 AM
I was sitting at the stop light get ready to give it gas and there was no throttle response, then my bike shut off. I turned the key off then back on and I am getting no headlights or turn signals. The battery is charged and I found one fuse which is still good. Anyone have and ideas or suggestions?   :dunno:

Try replacing the fuse anyway, check battery connections and check the connectors in the headlight. It may be a cracked wire from the ignition lock. Also check the connectors under the side panels are all secure.

The good fuse that you found may have been the spare.  Check out the Blown fuse? Electrical issues (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14519) thread  for more info, including pictures and diagrams.

It seems that all the connections are good. Also the spare and the main fuse has continuity. The one thing I don't understand is, my oil and neutral light come on when the key is in the on position, but no other lights work. What could cause that?

Check if your horn and indicator work. If the lights don't work and bike does not start well these are all on the right hand side so maybe the connector for them is bad or one of the wires is broken.

The last few posts in that thread I linked to illustrate some possible answers.  Follow your wiring harness up toward the headlight bucket and see if you can find any breaks or pinched parts.

Well I tried everything I can think of. Traced all the wires and checked for pinches and breaks, everything thing seems fine. Not sure what else to do that I haven't done. Guess my only option might be to take it to a mechanic. I don't want to but I also want to be able to ride soon. Oh well, I appreciate everyone's input.

It might be worthwhile to check the battery connections again. For some reason the negative side on my battery looses connectivity. When I jiggle the wiring there is a small spark. When the nut is loosened and retightened everything works okay. Be sure to check the adapter that connects the cable to the battery also. That's where mine is messing up.

BTW, even though my battery connection was messing up different lights would go out everytime.

Well today I took the tank off and traced all the wires and connections. The connections were good. The small wire coming off the negative was the culprit. The plastic connection on that wire was corroded and looked a little melted. So I cut it off and spliced the wires together and guess what? The bike started right up. Thank goodness. I am so glad that it wasn't anything more serious than that. Just wish that I would of caught that before I took the tank off and all. But oh well, you live and learn. Just want to thank everyone for their input and ideas  Love GStwin and that little bike. :thumb:
