My '89 GS was consuming oil. It wasn't worn rings as there was no smoke coming out the exhaust. Anyway I just kept feeding it oil. This morning however, I try and start the bike up and it won't start with the choke on. So I give it a lttle gas and it starts up but was performing really poorly. It made shreiking sounds and died. I tried to start it a few more times and it intermittently shrieked, so i turned it off. So something is seriously screwed. I guess I have a few options.
1) Go to the cycle salvage and find a used GS500 engine and swap it out.
2) Take off the cylinder head and see what is F'd up inside. Rebuild it.
3) Pay someone to fix it.
4) Sell the bike as parts.
Of these options which seems like the best idea. I paid roughly 1k for the bike, and don't want to put another thousand into it to make it run. But right now I'm SOL without my only source of transportation.

fastest. install another engine,
cheapest, fix it yourself
middle ground, pay someone to fix it.
with basic hand tools and a floor jack, you should be able to swap the engine out and next one in running inside of 8 hours easy. extra pair of hands to help move and lift, or stablize the engine is helpful and safer.
but this is assuming its a turn key engine needing only an oilchange before being run.
any idea on relative price differences between the three options?

good motor, 300 + 8 hours, rebuild motor min 150 + two weeks, pay somone else 500 + 1 week
I'm in week six of my re-build right now. We I'm getting soooooo close!
I have a complete top end sitting in my closet I could get rid of pretty damn cheap...

You treated that bike like shaZam!. You've crashed it who knows how many times. Now you're saying that the engine just died on you.
I also like how you left out the part about getting an SV650 on this forum. Learn how to take care of your bikes and stop crashing them or stop riding.
They're really simple reliable engines. If you can't work on this engine, I wouldn't get an SV and expect to be able to do any work on it.

pwn3d.
"pwn3d."

I flog my bike all the time. Hi revs, jack rabbit starts. Hard braking.
It's a strange realationship but I think the bike likes it.
Just check the oil and ride it hard.
You abuse it more by not riding it. :)
Hell, I'll hold mine at 90 MPH for 45 miles straight without a problem. Even had it up to 120 MPH on umm...a private closed course.
All I know is that I saw that bike before you bought it and it wasn't in that bad of shape.
I never said I didn't make stupid mistakes when I first started riding, I'm commenting more on your attitude that you've had in all your posts on both boards.
You could also take up some people's offers to look at the bike for you. People that are possibly a little more familiar with your GS500 than your mechanic.
Knight takes bishop.......check :o
I've had tyler over at hayasa motorbikes work on the bike, he comes well recommended over on barf and other places.
Back in the saddle again! Fawndog from BARF fixed my bike!
The "ignition pickup" was rotated so the timing was all wrong. Probably caused by me crashing my bike over and over and over again.
