hell, i am looking at a used gs500, and they say they had to change all the rings on the cylinders because of a dead cylinder. Its a 1992 gs, and i was wondering if this will most likely give me more problems in the future. Any other tips on what to check when i go see it is appreciated. Are the cylinders a problem with GS's, because the two gs's i found both had cylinder problems... thanks in advanced bryan
That sounds like crap to me ... They re ringed them ... not altogether bad if they did it well ... but I have managed 48K miles on one with the originals just fine thank you, and GsJack has done more - 80K and many others are closing in on 40K ... and mine was never babied either ... maintained but flogged ... 100 mile daily commutes, traffic, bad roads, regular gas ... you name it.

If they did a good job on the re-ring, and MADE SURE they repaired everything they needed to repair/replace, it should be as good as new. Good for another 50K.
I set out to clean the carbs on mine and since have replaced a rod (seized), cylinder(scored), pistsons(chewed), rings(gone), valves (bent). Oh, and I cleaned the carbs and changed the fork seals. But I expect my engine to perform like a new engine. Because it is. But I could have cut corners and just re-ringed it. It just depends.
