Title: 12 years at the back of a shed Oh Dear
Post by: Ferret on April 21, 2005, 12:22:30 PM
Hi Lads

Well 12 years ago i bought a 1990 Gs500, then around 9 months later i got me my first child  :) .Well the bike sat there under a cover as i could not afford to run her. Not wanting to sell her  i said ill keep her till i can afford to run her again.Well now i can just   I tell you what i pulled the cover and she is mint.

What ive done so far is this.
Before i atempted to start her i did a oil change.
Drained a full tank of 12 year old fuel and refilled.
Put a new battery on and cleaned all terminals.
Inflated to correct pressure the tyres.
Stripped the front and back calipers and cleaned and copper slipped them.
Pulled the plugs and dropped 20ml of oill down each plug hole and left it over night.
Turned it over on starter for a min or so and put back in the plugs.
Turned to prime and tried to start her no joy.
2hrs later she lives and i leave the choke on and let her run for 5 mins and drop the choke.

Now i blip the throttle and allow it to settle but every time i do this it backfires and somtimes it wont respond to the throttle instantly. Now im not bad with the spanners but dont want to atempt a carb strip with out a guide.

Ive done a search of this forum and found some info but still dont feel confident and it looks like i missed the online manual i carnt download it.
Come on guys help a brit wed help you :thumb:  What i need it all the adjustable settings.
Plugs
Tappets
Float Heights
Jets
Needles ect.

This would help a lot my wife says i carnt spend no more on her  :dunno: till next months pay check so i carnt afford a manual yet.

Title: This is gonna work again!

This is gonna work again.

The worst part was the inside part of the engine.

But since your crankcase can turn, and your rings did not weld,
it looks that the engine is OK.

Your problem is the remainings of the old fuel that are inside the carbs.
The old fuel probably damaged rubber and plastic parts, and I bet that
there is a gummy residue inside them.
Should check the rubber diaphragm too.
The good news is that I bet that a simple clean and rinse with soapy
water will return them to life (if membrane is OK).

The job is simple: just follow my howto and  the float valve howto.
It will take about 2 afternoons:
1: bike disassembly, carb removal, carb disassembly, cleaning.
2: go for spare parts if needed, carb reassembly, bike reassembly.

I'd be kinda cautious with those tires.....check em out real good....that's a long time for them to be sitting....don't wanna have dry-rotted wheels....

Hi
Tyres look good ive inspected them really close no cracks or anything i can see, but i know what your saying.
I have planned a airfilter the one in is dirty a set of plugs and i want to replace all the fuel lines with a additional filter inline.Think most comments regarding fuel starvation say replace with clear pipe which i will do.
But as i say the other half says next pay check thats what it means  :(
Ah well ive waited 12 years whats a month
What the plug gap guys i have em set at 25 thou.

12 year old tyres are categorically bad.  they will have hardened and won't have the grip.

if you do keep them on, i bet that within 160km you'll have noticeable cracking.

i speak from experience on this.

cheers,

Thanks tdan553527 ill adjust them in the morning.

@indestructibleman
Yes m8 im leaning toward your way of thinking and will swap em out as cash allows, for the moment i need to concentrate on getting her to run correct. But then she will have to pass a our road fittness inspection called a MOT so guess the tyres will be done before then.
How keen are your mecanical assesments for your machines in the states?

Emm well us Brits have to have any bike or car over 3 years old inspected once a year to ensure it safe to drive on the road.

For us Yanks, it is done on a state by state basis.  I live in Missouri, and therefore need an inspection.  Two blocks from home is Kansas.  They need no inspection.

Basically, it needs to have working: horn, headlight, turn signals, brake light.   I doubt they'd give a rats ass what the tires look like.

Have you checked out gs500e.co.uk (http://www.gs500e.co.uk/index1.html) yet?  They seem to be pretty active, and you might be able to find some local help.

My GS had been in the previous owners' shed for 7 years so I know you've got a lot of work ahead of you if you want to really clean her up good, but here's a short list of things that are pretty much guaranteed:

-you'll need new tires as already mentioned
-new battery
-any rust in the tank?
-carbs taken apart and soaked/cleaned
-likely need a new chain/sprockets, depending on rust, etc.

Take a peek at my before/during pics here: http://dperacing.com/images/92gs500/

Lots of crap needed cleaning out, boy...but MAN do I love this bike!! 8)

@raylarrabee thanks for the link man did a Google and never found that.

@ Jenerator  wow you really have put some work in there tell you what though when i put mine under the cover 12 years ago i sprayed it with WD40 all over excluding tank and panels, well i gunked it off and she look as the day she went under the cover.
Oh btw i forgot to mention it has the factory full faring off the later F model i think, i bought that new from a stealer all them years back.Ill get some pics up when i have her sorted.

Tell you what lads you are very helpful on here i just no i can get this bike 100% with your help.

Thanks

Title: Lots of things to do for a real good job.
Post by: marc on April 22, 2005, 12:23:44 AM
Lots of things to do for a real good job.

I suggested cleaning the carbs as the most important thing to do
to keep people from pointing you as the "moto-crap rider".

Once the engine is working, a new break-in period is suggested,
I can't believe that rings are not damaged at all. At least a little
rust should be there if they were not ceramic rings :-P

Both of my bikes were purchased used, after some years of storage,
and both showed problems with carb float valves.

If you want to do a real good job, tyres are important too.
Replace them ASAP, but if you have the "wife factor" problem, then
think that you can wait 800 miles (break-in period) to do it.
During that time you will see what's a fast degradation of the rubber.

Replace fuel lines too: I'm having trouble finding rubber hose that
fit the outputs of the tank: correct diameter but rubber is too thick.
You can use these that are not cloth-braided, but I'd prefer braided.

Another thing that needs special care is the rubber membrane inside the
petcock. It's a common issue in GS500 that it dries and does not let enough fuel reach the carb bowls, resulting in a lean mixture.
(aceleration/deceleration problems, backfires, fast idling, ...)
(use PRI instead of ON to check if the membrane is OK: if your bike
is performing the same in PRI that in ON, then your membrane is OK).

The valve cover gasket uses to leak when rubber dried.

Brake fluid turns acid after 4-6 years and damages master cylinder
and brake pistons. Replace it ASAP if it turned deep brown. Its colour
should be the same colour as honey.

Spray WD40 to the wheel bearings, and all other bearings attached to
the frame.

Check the fork tubes for spots of rust. They will damage front fork
seals.

Drop a few oil into the speedometer cable and the rpm counter.

Replace the battery exhaust hose.

Check front and rear brake pistons for their seals. These damn things
can't keep in place even when they are new.

You have a pretty big amount of work.
