Title: painting bike w/out sanding and primer
Post by: facio57 on April 25, 2005, 01:17:43 AM
Hey all,

The plastics and gas tank on my bike are faded due to the previous owner leaving it out in the sun.  I want to paint it but was too lazy to sand and primer, etc.  I just found out that krylon came out with a paint called Krylon Fusion which is the first paint that can bond directly to plastic and can work on metal too without flaking and crap.  Is this a feasible alternative? Thanks!

you seem lazy, sand it alittle, takes short time.  then paint it with what you know works.  If I were you I would go down to an auto parts store or paint store and buy duplicolor or somthing like that.  Its better.

If it's a keeper... have a pro do it... or buy your stuff from color-rite

if you don't sand it, then having paint that bonds to metal or plastic won't do you any good since you are putting paint on top of paint.  not paint on top of metal or plastic.

Ya color-rite, I used that before and also duplicolor, both are good stuff.

If you're going for the Mad Max look it might do. Love the twin, Mexico, and this forum.

as far as the tank goes, if your too lazy to sand, what about liquid paint remover, i used it a few years back and it totally eat all the paint off, i was amazed, lol :P

that krylon fusion paint sucks. i tried it with some problem pieces i had. i had them sanded down bare. the crap still didn't stick. if you don't sand it you are gonna see way too many imperfections and if you are painting over the clear it is gonna come off pretty easy.

I recently repaint my gas tank, and after 2 days of sanding, I realized that you can buy a can of paint stripper/remover, spray it on the tank within 10 minutes all the paints peels off, then lightly hand sand the tank and spray on a coat of primer, and then paint whatever color you want. have fun and enjoy!
