Title: air gone, tire flat, but no leak?
Post by: Rema1000 on April 25, 2005, 05:42:13 PM
After not riding since Friday, I found my front tire completely flat this morning.  It didn't even register on the tire gauge.

I cleaned it up and inspected it, but couldn't find anything.  I left it at 40psi , and tonight, it read 38psi (maybe just lost a little air in the checking).   I put the wheel in a pan of water, but still found no leak, from the tire or from the valve stem (I wiggled the stem a bit too).

So now, I'm left with a very clean front tire, but no idea how it leaked down.  I'd suspect foul play, except that that I keep it in a garage.  I think I may have checked tire pressure Friday evening.  I wonder if the schraeder valve just got wedged open a little bit after checking?  Anybody ever have a mystery-flat?

Sorry Rema1000 it was me, I travel the Nation(and sometimes the world) letting the air out of the front tire unsuspecting GS'........muhhahah...

No but, if you get some dirt in the valve when you check it can cause it to hold open a bit, I would air it up and see how long it holds air for...could be a freak kinda deal...or was it me?

Not a mystery flat but a mystery slow leak. Actually I have yet to check the tire for punctures. My bad. I set/check the pressure everytime I ride and its usually good for a couple of days. Although, once I checked it and the pressure was 17psi!!! after only 3 days.  :o That was the worst drop in pressure. Since its looks like crappy weather here for the next 5-6 days I guess I'll have to do some real checking into this. If I find coll0412, I'll have my answer.
I'll get back to this thread - if its still current by the time I do my checking.

if you can't find any visiable bubbles with soapy water, and the valve stem is fine, then I whould suspect a worn valve stem core o ring.  or a cracked wheel

My father's Big Red three wheeler was bad to leak air around the rim.

Update: I rode surface streets to my first two destinations today, and all was well.  So I punted, and took freeway the rest of the day, with no problems.  It doesn't appear to be a slow leak.  I'm inclined to blame Coll... or the valve stem.  I'll change-out the valvestem next time I replace the front tire.
