Does it have clip-ons? Europe, who knows, but JDM and USDM '89's were either black or white (I believe). Other than that, difficult to say. . .
Yes it has clip-ons. The colors that i found for GS was on GStwin info page.
Perhaps other owners can check there frame numbers and from that decide whats possible year model for mine.

I believe that info is for bikes in the US only. I know I've seen these bikes in colors that weren't even offered in the US, so it is possible that your bike is a 1999.
Hang on.... Your bike is a GM51B (continental European?) model, not a GM51A (UK?).
I would expect the engine numbering sequences for the two models to be separate and distinct. Can anyone verify that this is the case? (Or refute it, which is just as good?)
i bought my gs new in 2000 it's black and the frame tag says made 6/99 if that helps.

He brings up a good point. Compare the year of registration with the year of manufacturing. They are often different with the registration year being one year later than manufacturing year.
A frame date of 99 means a model year of 2000. My frame dates are both 1989 but are considered 1990 models.
July is the change over month. so his should still be a 99
Hi denman, what framenumber does your 2000 has.
Mine is GM51A111494. Purchased in Spain,
Does 51A really mean UK model and 51B continental european?

The Haynes publication is from the UK. The information in my post above is directly from the Haynes manual.
Unfortunately Haynes does not mention continental Europe frame numbers. My ebay searches for German GS sales is turning up nothing because no one lists the frame number.
It would be nice if someone knew a Suzuki corporate employee that could shed some light on this.
Just mailed Suzuki in sweden for any information about number series compared to year model. If they give me some info I will release it here.

I don't know - that was just a guess. Judging from the "Hits" listed on
this page there are more GM51As out there than GM51Bs ... but that still doesn't tell us much.

btw where the hell is the frame# that's one of the last things in the world i care about. i hate any thing to do with numbers. i can count good enuf not to get riped off when i cash my pay check and when i buy stuff. see ya.

The 'Y' is what tells you it's a 2000 model. See the chart in
THIS POST, and the explanation in my subsequent post in the same thread.
