Title: All Done (pics)
Post by: treybrad on April 26, 2005, 01:06:07 PM
So really, there is no point to this post other than to be a whore and tell you how awesome I think my bike is.... I bought it last winter as a non-running, wrecked, fixxer upper, and I think I finally have it where I want it just in time for summer. Anyway, I guess a big thanks is in order for everyone on this board, no telling how much $$ I've saved being able to get parts cheap and do work myself.    I just got her painted by a local friend, color isn't what I was expecting, but I think it turned out pretty well. Anyway, that's pretty much it. Enjoy my wasted bandwidth.

Here's where it all started...(I had the tank and sides, but they were off for some reason.. think ugly, faded, scratched, purple paint...):

What kind of mirrors are those, they look nice.

Also, what kind of pipe is that?

Bike looks clean, kudos on your great work.

Those are SV mirrors, I really wanted the round ones from the early bikes, but.. meh. I think these look fine.

The pipe is the F1s like in the before pic. I just peeled off the crusty sticker w/ a razor blade and got some aluminum polish and went to town.

Oh yeah, this isn't really on topic but.. I got my advancer back from Bob B, world of difference. I basically gained 1-2k RPMs worth of power band down low. Take offs and slow putting around (IE looking for a parking spot or traffic...) are wayyyy smoother. When I added the pod I felt like a lost a lot of oomph down low, the advancer made it all come back and then some  :thumb:

Did you have to rejet with that pipe, and where did you get it?

I'm wanting an aftermarket pipe without rejetting, is it possible?

You don't need to re-jet with that pipe.   Srinath will tell you about the F-1!

And I bet that pipe came on it.  But you can get one on Dennis Kirk I'm pretty sure for a couple hundred clams.  Pretty much the only slip on that doesn't require fabrication for the GS.

Looks like you've broght that bike along ways from when you got it, good work.  I really like the angle of that last pic, it looks sweet from there.

I know what exhaust wrap does.. but wondering why it is needed in GS?

Great work man!  Only suggestion I could make to improve the looks further would be a quick spray of the same color on the chain guard.  I think it looks better, some people don't.

Did you purposely leave that un-painted?

Great looking bike and have a great summer cruising on it!!

Why would I tell him about the Cobra ??? and DK has wileyco ... or they also have cobra ??? I hate the cobra ...
BTW that pipe looks nothing like a cobra F1R or F1S ... looks more like a D&D can. Heck its more wiley co than cobra ... whihc i know its not cos the ends on a wiley co are outside like a cap on the outer sleeve.
And sweet bike. But that wrap is just wrong ...
Cool.

It looks great!  I've been thinking about doing something similar to mine.

Did you have to remove everything to get the frame painted?  Like the engine and so forth?

Is this Squeaky's work?

Great job  :thumb:  :thumb:
I've been very impressed reading about your project.  The black wheels look best.  The longhorn on the license plate is a nice touch...
I'm getting an Aggie sticker on mine this weekend. ;)

Well, unless the prev. owner put a F1s sticker on the can, it's definitely an F1s. All I did was take off the fugly sticker.

You do need to rejet w/ the F1s. I don't know why you wouldn't. I'm running 150/40/2 w/ the pipe, pod, and advancer. Runs like a top.

Exhaust wrap always gets a mixed reaction. I've always liked it, and my pipe kept looking like ass everytime I painted it, so... on went the wrap. I think it looks tough or something... who knows. I'm weird.

Mk1- Chain guard I didn't really think about. I dunno, it doesn't bother me so I probably won't mess with it. I think I like the contrast.

xtalman- It is Squeaky's work. She did the tank and all the plastics. I've never had the frame repainted, but yeah, you would have to tear everything down to do so.

Blueknyt- Yeah, I need to read up on flipping the tail light. That's my next project I think.

luksi-  :nana:  It's cool, I'm always impressed w/ the amount of Aggie pride there is running around in Austin.

Anyway, thanks for the compliments, I'll pass them along to the bike.  :thumb:

Title: Tear
Post by: The Buddha on April 27, 2005, 09:35:30 PM
Oh OK ... looked like D&D ... but ...
The wrap ... ha ha I did somehting equally stupid ... painted the exhaust silver ... Why ... either that or white ... only colors of high heat they had at that auto parts store ... Looks like shetie ... Runs and crap in black get covered up and less visible easily ... this just has 12 shaded of silver pointing to the blemish in concentric pattern ... POS. My favorite has to be that ashy black I have seen ... covers blemishes so well ...
Now painting the frame ... I knew of one that was painted like 2-3 times He said he wrapped news paper on the motor and hand sanded and sprayed it with lacquer based paint with a spray gun ... Minimal overspray on some parts ... but he said the first time it took him a day to wrap and sand and spray, the second time he did it in 3 hours ... hence the sloppier job. I was really a stand out finish and he said it was over a year old at the point I saw it.
Cool.
Srinath.

Probably, but we can let it die again because I found another thread that had pictures in it.

Well, I'm not going to figure out exactly which pics I posted originally. But I know it's annoying when and old thread gets brought up and the links are dead.. I'm actually surprised my email notification works 2 years later...

Anyway, when I first bought it:

There were lots of posts of "in progress" pics, but here was the final result more or less...

And about a week after I sold it to some guy, I got pictures of it like this: (I have no idea how he snapped Srinath's bars like that..)

And here's my new toy:

You can see my roomate's GS project in the background of this one...

enjoy this 2 year old thread.

Oh yeah, I recently saw it for sale on Craigslist in Austin for dirt cheap. I think he was asking $900. Looked like the forks and pretty much everything but the tank had been replaced.

Did someone on here buy it? Still had the exhaust wrap and everything...

It looked great.. painful to see it after d00d wrecked it.. the SV looks nice too. The picture near the beach made me laugh, cuz I JUST saw a picture on SVRider of a blue SV with tailbags laying on its side in the sand.. I had to do a double take and make sure it wasn't yours.
