my gas tank and cap are junk. i have patched my tank for now but will be looking to get a new one soon. do any other bikes tanks fit our bikes?
i'm just curious if i can find a tank somplace that would fit and just wouldn't have thoes weird pockets on the bottom sides that collect water and rust.
i check ebay every now and then, but most gs 500 tanks that come through aren't alot better off than mine is.
thanks for the help.

Exactly what do you mean by "junk?" If it is rust and crap like that inside, there is a coating technique you can try. If it is hammered, dented, scratched, etc. this is only cosmetic. If it is both...send it to Srinath.
Yea, the ebay tanks are either super, or $hit. I saw a pristine 89 tank list and sell in about 2 hours with a by it now for $60. I would have bought it then except my Paypal was lower than that.
Srinath has a way of fitting any tank to any GS 2001 or before. He will be along soon enough.
I'd be interested in hearing what tanks can fit as well. It's easy to find SV tanks pretty cheap on Ebay. Of course, I have an SV so I guess I could just check it out myself
well the tank was kinda rusty. so i cleaned and coated the inside. then i decided to mess with the paint on he outside. i took off some paint on the sides and it sprung about 10 differetn small leaks. i pathced thoes as best i could for now, and took more paint off, only to discover that there are 2 spookily large patches of bondo in my tank (would have romoved thoes too, but i'm too afraid of what i would find underneath).
so it's junk.
which is in keeping with my bikes theme. the more i take it apart the more i wonder about it's past.
bought it from a guy in columbus ohio who supposedly bought it from his brother. it isn't in the best shape, but i like it.

Who ... what ... what ....
I can fit a 01+ tank on an 89-00 and vise versa (Vice versa isn't worth mentioning cos anyone can do that ... 01+ on 89-00 needs a set of brackets made for the fairing ... else its direct fit. I wish i could fit any tank on anyhting ...
Cool.
Srinath.

What I
meant was any GS tank. :)
If you thought about it long enough Srinath, I bet you could make an old water heater tank work out. A little black powder coating, a silver Suzuki sticker, and who would notice? Imagine a 35 gallon tanked GS. OMG you could run for weeks before refilling. Maybe if we conserve the rpm settings we could go cross country on one tank. We'd be famous!!
On the other hand, you may have to register with the A.T.F. because it could be considered dangerous. Hmmmm. This need more thought. (Man I will be glad when my last final is over today!)

Aha! A bad coating job. This is a slippery slope and Srinath has undone more poor Kreem jobs than any human on this planet. Don't s-can the tank, but the quickest way out of this is another functional tank. Srinath might be interested in another challenge, but I cannot speak for him.
What product did you use? I have the POR15 kit and will be attempting to seal my leaky tank soon (after finals this week). Srinath is a Kreem fan. Do a search and you will find his recipe for a happy tank.
I often wonder if a class action lawsuit is in order for the quality of the tanks. At the very least Suzuki would offer a swap for a minor fee.

old water heater nothing.... how about a boxed wine bag?
if you only knew.....
I love srinath!
well, i used kreem, and i read a little on the forums about it before hand.
but what i think really messed it up was the almost dime sized hole (on the underside near the crap pocket) that the previous owner had patched over with somthing. it had kreem in it befor i started, so i MEK'ed it. the old kreem was worse than what i did to it. but it was only a matter of time before it went to junk anyway, then paint and rust were the only things holding gas in the tank.
in the long run (when i get a semi decent job) i intend to make this bike into an unusual street fighter (is there any other kind?) for city riding and in town commuting.
i plan to get a different bike for highway and cross country duty. perhaps a bandit 1200, or old bmw k100. i have no idea.
so if i could easily fit a tank or a differnet bike (honda, kawa, yamaha) i wouldn't mind.
i guess i would just need some mean brackets. hmmmm.
franken-zuki?
hon-zuki?
su-kawa?
yama-zuki?
i'll probably just end up making alot of work for myself, but it's fun.
there we go, just mount them a few inches apart with some crazy awesome brackets and you even get a handy storage compartment inbetween!
no seriously, how weird would that look.
i don't really intend to use these, but it would be different.
