Title: Oil experts? For engines other than GS500? Need advice.
Post by: Crimson on April 27, 2005, 08:46:44 AM
Spring means  changing the oil in all my stuff.. already did the GS500 for the wife.. Did the lawn tractor, but started doing the lawn mower and rototiller and came up with a question.

The lawn tractor recommends 5w-30, and I put in 10w40..

The lawn mower recommended straight SAE30, but I put in 10w40 since thats what I had.

The Rototiller recommended SAE30 as well, or 5w30, but then specifically said DO NOT USE 10w40.

I'm wondering if I made a mistake putting 10w40 in the tractor and mower?  I understand the whole rating system.. but I am wondering why something would specifically say NOT to use a heavier oil.. would it have something to do with not being able to circulate properly?

I figured I would use 10w40 in the tractor and mower to protect them better, since they are never used when the temp is even anywhere CLOSE to freezing.   Think there is any problem with using it even though they recommend SAE30 or 5w30?

And with the rototiller recommending specifically AGAINST 10w40, I suppose I should follow it?

Well, if your lawn tractor recomends 5w30, it means you have a honda (i know nothing about), a Kohler, or a Briggs Intek, Meaning on the Kohler USE WHAT THEY RECOMEND.  the Kohler has hydraulic valve lifters and a pressurized oil system, the heavier oil is not good, the intek has a pressurized system as well, but I don't think it has hyd lifters.  Anyway, they recomend it for a reason, go to the auto store and drop down 5 bucks on the right oil, cheap insurance.

Now, on your push mower, depends on the engine, a tecumseh 4.5 hp or up use what is recomended, on a briggs or honda, it doesn't matter as much, we put 10w40 in and no problems....
