From where I read elsewhere, the choker is easy to get rid of with a hammer. If that is the case, put a choker on mine, that way I can just knock it out when I rejet.

Post by: The Buddha on May 04, 2005, 06:52:07 AM
I'll be happy if none of these come back (OK just one had to be re made, not like the first gen bars) ...
But Getting business to my welder, and helping him out and y'all out and making a bit of money on the side ... I'll be happy ... But see where there is no $$ there is no motivation ... so I am late on stuff constantly, I wait to find deals on stuff as my original assesment of $$ depended on getting stuff at a lower $$ (bars are typical of this ... the steel place calls me when they had a price drop ... I had to buy the thing right then) ... so I am waaay off schedule on stuff and dont even bother to apologise ...  In any case, these will get started by tonight ... and get finished in 3-4 days - depending on what the muffler shop and laser place tells me ...
Ktrim - consider your self added.
Cool.

Post by: The Buddha on May 04, 2005, 09:01:29 PM
OK muffler shop asked me to leave the one they made and said they'd have a bunch made tommorow ... by tommorow night I'd be beyond adding to it most likely ... They need someone to work on it ... they were swamped today ... Next stop - Laser ...

Looks about right for me. Just a reminder, I sent $70 for flange and jets...#40 pilots and 127.5 mains. Not sure if that was on your list too
Title: Dont worry ...
Post by: The Buddha on May 05, 2005, 08:11:12 PM
I'll bumdle and ship, dont worry, I wont miss it, many carbs, bars and jets of course have been added to the flanges ... so I'll check for sure ...
Now at 3pm the muffler guys hadn't done it ... They said they'd call me when its done, and they close at 5, and no calls ... so i guess its not done ...
So maybe 1 more day ... maybe the whole damn weekend for y'all to add to the list ...   :x
In any case ... laser cutting is the real stopping point ... I cannot get them to do 1-2 .. 25 minimum they said ...
Cool.

Title: Swamped
Post by: The Buddha on May 06, 2005, 10:05:05 PM
I was swamped today, but the muffler clowns didn't call me either ... we got no accountability in this town ... The TV guy that took my TV for repair is working on it for 18 months ... the muffler shop never does anything on time ... time might as well not exist in this place ...
Cool.

It's cool.  You're not a retail shop--nobody expects you to be able to mass produce these things in a week.  Hope your shop comes through!  Looking forward to getting my rejetted carbs, K&N lunchbox and wileyco up and running.  MSF this week, so I wouldn't be able to ride untill after that, anyway.

If the flanges are gonna be much longer, though, do you think you could ship my carbs back seperately?  If it's a huge pain, skip it, but if it's only a small pain, I'd really appreciate it.

On behalf of all those in need, Srinath, I thank you for providing all these services--I'm sory this one turned into such a pain for you.
Title: No pain...

No pain ... yet ... in any case I got the flat things from laser today, just the muffler shop has to get their act together but they will be good to run tommorow I think ... then we weld ... Got my guy prepped for a Mid week welding binge ... Lets hope it works.

Title: We got flanges
Post by: The Buddha on May 30, 2005, 05:32:27 PM
OK we got flanges ... Before you all get over excited ... Yea only 20 or so, more being made tommorow ... and none have been choked ... I will count out and put it in tommorow ...
Also these all aren't as high as Stevemac's turnsignal burning design, and aren't as close so they clobber the brake caliper like weasel's did ... so I think all will be happy ...
Pics ... did someone say they want pics ...  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x  :x
OK in a bit ...

Glad the shop finally came through for you (and us).  I should be done with my new paint job by the time the flange and my carbs come in.

Any tips on how to figure out where we should cut the stock exhaust pipe off?  Don't want to end up cutting it too short.
Title: Pic
Post by: The Buddha on May 30, 2005, 09:15:47 PM
OK I'll send you a pic ... but 2-3 inches past the weld on the bottom of the headers ... where that Y connection is ... just after it becomes 1 pipe from 2 ... 2-3 inches behind ... and sand it good ... fit it a few times and see that it fits tight but does fit ... and not bind up and stop 1/2 way ...
Cool.
Srinath.

should it be welded after it is fit?
Title: Nope
Post by: The Buddha on May 31, 2005, 10:05:37 AM
No welding needed from a user perspective. Its a tight fit ... you need to sand the header well of all the paint and at one point it will fit tight and not jam up and bind .. then fit it on and it should be good.
Dnorwoo - I'll make the change.
Cool.
Srinath.
Title: And update ...
Post by: The Buddha on May 31, 2005, 10:13:38 AM
I guess I should post this here ...
Flanges are eating my head at this point ... The bike I had them fitted to had no foot peg carriers ... like an Idiot I didn't correctly guess where the foot pegs will be and might ahve some welded up wrong ... lets see ... I have a few extras made ... Hopefully I dont lose the entire 20 or so ...
Meanwhile muffler shop is still making some more ... 20 or so bent pipe pieces ... and My welder is out on a job, he was gonna be in his shop today ... but somehting came up ... so I am like screwed ...
Cool.

Title: What
Post by: The Buddha on June 01, 2005, 09:37:18 PM
What do you think the S was for in GS ...   ... I didn't do nohting great ... muffler shop and my welder ... In fact I have been getting muffler shops to fit exhausts on bike for 10 years ... but I know some places have some serious problems wiht doing bike stuff ... There was a small shop in town I checked out this time cos the big place that always did it was swamped ... and that dude was a total Jerk-ass ... I'm like ... Whatever ... you have 30-35 repeat items with 2 simple bends and you tihnk its hard ... went back to the bigger place, waited and waited and waited ... and finally a few boxes of donuts later ... it was done ... Some how They could only manage like 10-12 at a time ... Laser shop rolled off 43 pieces when I asked for 35, these guys did like 41 - 42 ... and I got more ... Anyway ... tommorow ... I guess some pics or instructions should be posted too ... cos no 2 are alike ... each is a shade different ...
Cool.

Srinath, really looking forward to getting my choker flange! I have been trying to find all GS's in my area and get them on this site because of all the info and all the goodies you make for us.

You SHOULD really make some stickers with your name on them, and charge a few bucks for them. Would probably sell better than the GStwin stickers (no putdown to those, got one on my bike). I would surely buy a few for my bike.

THANKS AGAIN, BigTwin

What ... OK fine its now grudgingly been endorsed by Srinath ... along with any other weird crap you guys make up ... Sorry the nonstop 36 hours of rain has left me with no possibility of taking your stuff to the UPS place ... wihtout the boxes getting soaking wet in the back of my truck ... too much shaZam! is in the truck ... like power tools, bike parts put there 4 months ago, news paper from weirdassville TN etc ... so ... tommorow or as soon as I get a dry hour or 2 ... BTW tommorow is supposed to be sunny ... However I made the chokers for the ones that wanted, found out 2 of the flanges didn't quite point perfectly ... and also found out there are some advantages to having an old GS ... Tighter flange fit ... cos I have some flanges that are a bit shorter ... so it wont stick out as far ... so maybe people can say if theirs is old GS and I'll send out the better flange for that purpose.
Cool.

Title: Old
Post by: The Buddha on June 02, 2005, 08:08:16 PM
Old is Pre 2000 ... they changed the exhaust in 2001 ... so you have to cut it at the point the larger dia ppipe comes over ... in the 89-00 type you can cut the header a shade longer ... and have the slip on fit in so that it clears everyhting but still stays closer to the front ... on the 01+ you cant ... hence the pipe had to be longer ... now I tried to make them all that longer size ... some were on the short end making it ideal as a 89-00 ...
Cool.

The stuff is packed and addressed ... hope I can send it off tommorow.
The Revenge of the Srinath ... you should see that movie ... I think lots of flanges and flange clones are getting made and cut with a saw etc ... ofcourse the laser cutting guys are cutting the round things with their lasers ... far better than light sabers If you ask me ... Of course I have Boba Fit - who fits them on the bike ... and Yoda is my welders 4 yr old daughter who usually is playing in the dirt  ... so pretty much better than star wars.
Cool.

Title: OK these are the ...
Post by: The Buddha on June 05, 2005, 09:11:36 PM
OK these are the ones going tommorow ...
Snapper (well laura was the first to pay up from last year ... but this batch it was you in first ... whoo hooo)), Thirin, raylarrabee, jared, milo, queball, ry_guy, dnorwoo, cozy, random, airbrush, apbrian12 ...

Other shipping issues -
Nemesis109 - need an address ...
Carbs are going back to the ones that sent it to me ... except Kokomosam ... I will send it in a day or 2 - heavy duty crap on it ... needs extra time in the diesel vat.
Ktrim ... didn't realise you are getting flange also from me ... would be better to send carbs and flange in one box ... in a day or 2 after I fix up a set of carbs ... so send yours on ... I'll see how quick I can knock it out.
Someone wanted to have the flange first without waiting for bars ... forgot who ??? Lemme know and I'll send it out and you'd have to pay for shipping ... 2 in 1 box is prolly like $1 extra ... 2 separate will be like $8-12 more ...
If anyone has moved since they sent me the check or paypal ... send me your address pronto ... else its going to your old house. BTW Not Ry_guy - I have your address cos you updated me ...
And ... I dont want to name names ... but If you live in CA and I have said $8-12 for shipping from NC ... its not $8 ... its $12 ... so send me enough to cover me for shipping ... I cant hold your shipment up for that $2-3 ... and I will forget who paid what for what from where ...
And paypal eats $2 or 4% ... I dont want to pay that ... if you send me a check it also helps me in the UPS thing ... I write your name on the box and read out the address to the counter lady ... they print label and off it goes ... easier ... If you have to use paypal ... cover me for that $2 ... OK this is a large operation run by amateurs with the filing skills of a chimp (AKA - me) so for that its extermely smooth ... Now off to shove all this in the recently emptied truck ... where I was going like ... oh ... that's where the savage manual was ... OK ...
The rest will be getting it in my next lot to be sent off as soon as I get the boxes I need. Tuesday if not tommorow.
Cool

I just installed mine a yesterday and the fit of the flange was very nice i was suprised (no offense srinath), but i unbolted the entire system to gain access to the midpipe, used a cutoff wheel at the midpipe and bolted everything back together took an hour and thats on an 04f removing the fairing also.  On a naked it would be even easier

Im sooo stoopid ... These flanges fit in the Larger 2 day and priority mail boxes ... No need to get that exclusive elusive tube crap ... They didn't fit ... but I guess the old ones were cranked up so high they had more of a angled in the wrong way ... so didn't fit ... Off to score a few 100 from Staples and out it goes USPS ...

Anybody got a picture of the C- Cut on the header?
Title: Wait
Post by: The Buddha on June 10, 2005, 07:25:39 AM
Cozy ... that is old flange ... of whihc I swapped oput all of them from people ... the header should be cut down at the bottom ... on an 89-00 cut about 4 inches out from the weld at the bottom where headers join to 1 pipe ... and then slide on ... remember ... you can always cut more but cannot re join ... The mid pipes that say "Old" on it ... anyone that has got one of those ... has the choice of cutting the header exactly where they like to fit the mid pipe ... You first try 4-5 inches ... fit it on ... if its too far back ... start cutting closer ... make sure its not hitting stuff ... and have it as tight as you want ... A flange that says new ... or says nothinbg on it ... the flange is longer than what it needs to be ... just a shade ... so cut it where ever and put it on. On 01+ bikes ... you have to cut the larger dia pipe off completely and fit it on the smaller pipe ... so not options there ... Some pipe were just a shade shorter than ideal ... I have an 89-00 ... not a 01+ hence I had to assume and sometimes I was a little too low on the length ... so those shorter flanges are ideal for 89-00 for a tight fit.
Cool.
Srinath.

Mine does not, but I think there is some variance in the flanges (and where people cut their headers) so I suppose it is possible that one could.

Here is a quote from another thread that explains what to do about the center stand

Quote from: Jake DThere are a couple photos in the Member Bikes wall of fame, 5th page, where Srinath shows you where to cut the stock pipe.  The rest is pretty much simple.  Clean the area on the stock pipe with a sander/grinder, some WD-40.  Zip tie a piece of car tire to the right leg of the center stand.  Slip the mid-pipe on.

OK I sent to Blazinjr and to Phaedrus on the 4th of july. Blazinjr was priority mail ... supposed to reach by the 7-8th, Phaedrus was parcel post ... may not be too late on that just yet ... I also sent 2 more to GA, one by parcel post to zip 30024 and one to zip 31088 by priority mail ... I know for sure the one to 30024 got there ... cos I heard from him about it. So if you live in zip 31088 and have a flange ordered ... confirm if you got it or not ...
Now this is all significant because ... the freaking post office automated machine printed out labels that were 1/2 blank ... the very next working day I called them and faxed over a copy of the receipt that I had ... so I wanted them to find my stuff and send it to the address on the box ... They cannot have done it to 1 or 2 of the 4 and left the other 2 or 3 ... I will go down to the post office and kick some ass ... I just need to know who's got it and who's not ...
Cool.

Top 10 uses for a wileyco can without a flange

10. You can use it as a makeshift megaphone / blowhorn

09. It is a great place to hide your candybar / weed / porn stash

08. It makes a unique piggy bank!

07. Use it as a rolling pin for your next batch of chocolate chip cookies

06. Stuff it down the front of your pants and say "Hello Ladies.." whenever you walk into a room.

05. Give it to your boss and tell him it is a West Coast Chopper paperweight.

04. Fill it with gunpowder and drop it into the firepit on your camping trip

03. Get a backyard "Wileycoball" team together. Use the same rules as American football.

02. Throw the pipe away; we got the IMPORTANT parts already: they hat, sticker, t-shirt, and keychain.

01. Put in some current items and bury it as a time capsule. Open it up in 3 months when the flange arrives. *rimshot*

Feel free to add to the list

I've given up all hope of having it before I go to the Carlisle Summer Bike Fest, though.  :x I am hoping to see it within the next couple of weeks so I can have it atleast THIS RIDING REASON. Up here in New York, we don't get to ride year round like the south. Mostly April-November, and then the snow starts to fly and stick. I honestly hope I get it by sometime by the end of August at the latest. If not by then, then thats just plain rediculous

I'm trying to hold in there fairly patient for now, though!  :thumb:

Title: This

Quote from: BlazinjrDid the bars get done Yesterday?

This is one of the reasons I hate making stuff and selling ... I cant charge the price I am charging if I dont presell 75%+ ... it will be 1000's of dollars I'd have tied up ... cant afford that ... now pre selling has this as the draw back ... Every 2 seconds someone wants a freaking update ...  :x  ... FWIW ... its in my truck at the present time, and will most likely sit there till I get out of work and get back to packing them ... Yours in effect has not been packed yet ... and the reason its not been packed is that I haven't looked at that old list where you wanted choker or non choker ... BTW ... everyone that has a flange or a bar ... send me update choker or not, new gs or old, and 2 weld or 4 weld (01+ GS or 90-00 will cover that). I may not have enough chokers to go out today ... will get them choked and sent out in a day or 2 ... if that's the case. Might expedite the packing ... instead of me getting back home and searching for the old lists ...
Cool.

I have an 05 GS500F and am new to modifing bikes.  Could  someone tell the difference between choked and non-choked flanges?  And what model number Wileyco pipe everyone is useing?  Last thing Srinath do you have any more flanges for sale?  I guess that should have been the fist question.
BTW Great forum have been having a blast reading all the post here.
Thanks in advance

I don't see anything wrong with pre-selling srinath, you do a good service for the GS community and no one (I don't think) is trying to give you hell.  :thumb:  But if it were me, and I was doing what you do, I'd be like "Ok, eveyone place your orders and pay now, and I will have them by "X" date". Ya know? I have no problem with waiting personally, I just like to know when it is that I am waiting for so I know when to expect it. That sort of thing.

BTW - Choked for later model GS (2004 GS500F).
Title: Yup
Post by: The Buddha on July 19, 2005, 12:39:57 PM
Yup ... X date was back in May as someone pointed out ... That X is moving always ... and its never moving backwards ... I have 1000 BS crap to deal with ... Steel is there, OK I start collecting orders ... and when I come up with $$ and decide to buy steel for making so many ... they're like Huh.... we have 20 feet ... we need a week to get the 100 you need ... OK great ... then my welder has to fix someone's leaky roof or someone's Dune buggy ... cos he was ready the week before. Nowadays I dont even set a time with him before the stuff is bought and I have final count ... cos I know I'll never make it ... and I dont wanna disrupt his shop ... then he's busy with new baby or wife who was pregnant or someone's big ass plow or holding tank ... Then finally I get him to make it, then powder shop ... finally it comes back and I work on shipping ... Its an engineering operation ... nothing ever goes on time ... I have thought about improving it myself ... and the final result ... nope ... My wife has tried, so has my welder ... His own life is a mess ... I have Danny's frame on his table and he's welding it ... I wanted to get that by sunday ... its tuesday and we're no where near done ... and the powder guy has no schedule for the color so we're not that bad there ... I get it in the next 2-3 days and we'll be good ... The end result is ... if its going forward I am happy ... No real targets etc ... I have a list and try to get the things done as per that ... Making it worse is the fact that I dont know what my work day is going to turn into ... maybe chained to the desk, may be on the phone, may be on the road ... no clue ... Anyone who has made stuff knows and counts all these in ... The large category of "shaZam! Happens" ... So shaZam! getting lost in the mail is just one more of those pleasures of making stuff ... But that was stupid of me ... blank labels ... dont ship ... WTF ... they Post office loses stuff with labels printed ... why wont they lose it if the labels were 1/2 blank ...
Cool.

I used to make and modify parts on another forum.

Diamond plate racing pedals, Diamond plate brakets, braces and covers, custom exhaust, and the occasional ported intake manifold.  So I sort of know what you are going through.

So you are the designer at the mercy of the workers?  I had one friend to try and help me and he fudged an exhaust job for me.  Then he said he would help and did not show up for a couple days.

If I was you I would invest in a 110 mig welder and learn to use it.  Removing the cost of paying someone to weld will bring you more $profit$.   Only if you plan on keep making these.

I have access to a hydraulic exhaust pipe bender, I think he only paid around $100 for it and it does up to 2 inch pipe(I paid extra for the peice to do 2.25)  I bought it and the welder and started to install custom exhaust on the side.

I quit doing a lot of it because I got switched over to a 7 day swing shift and didn't have as much time for the extra work.

I posted on another thread and figured I would do it here also.

i want a flange  :(
Title: Wait a sec ...
Post by: The Buddha on July 26, 2005, 05:06:14 PM
OK I have flanges ... there is a small caveat ...
There is 5 total ...
1 for new GS - choked.
2 for old GS choked.
2 for old GS and needs re-riveting of the end cap (these were supposed to be mine but I sold the 2 wiley co's in a moment of broke-ness) ... so nothing has been made to fit them ... but they are real high exit ones ... burn your Turn signal high ... and they are non choked.
In a pinch You can fit a Old GS one on a new GS ... may have to take it to a muffler shop and spread the free end an 8th of inch ...
New GS flange will fit old GS as is ...
I would like to make sure UPS/USPS hasn't lost the flanges I sent out earlier this week ... and then these are available ... sorry for that ... but UPS/USPS insurance can only pay $$ these are sorta irreplaceable ... so I wanna take care of that little issue first.
Cool.

Title: Come across
Post by: The Buddha on July 27, 2005, 06:50:43 AM
Come across ... What ... You know I make them right ... OK used to make ... In a pinch an old flange can be fitted on a new GS ... just spread the end to the right size ... or try sliding it inside your header ... but that way you'd need a tighter fit ... else it will leak ... heck weld it on ... muffler shops can do that for like next to nothing ...
Cool.

Ha ha ... yea and the answer is you do ... but the new 4 weld bar only has 2 welds ...    ... I bent the inside in tighter ... and hence 2 welds are = 4 ... Install it and see ... the damn thing was more trouble than it was worth ... but from a user's point of view its a better product ...

Wow I got my flange today too 8)

Upon inspection I got a choker. I think...not really sure but it has the tip blocking flow welded on to where the mounting bolts go. Not a big deal I'll drill a series of small holes in it and hit it a few time with a hammer then file it smooth. Should be good to go :thumb:

How many exhaust gaskets is recomended? I don't think my one that came with the pipe is thick enough to get a reall good seal.... :dunno:

Only question I have floating around in my mind is should I taper the flange opening to fit over the exhaust header?
Title: Break it

I had to modify/sand/grind the bars to get them to work.

You might want to go back the old 4 weld style.  Where you put the tighter bends it actually put the bend into the clamps a little bit + too thick of powder coating.

The flange worked out pretty good though.  It's a lot higher exit than stock and I love it.
Title: Yea
Post by: The Buddha on July 29, 2005, 07:31:53 AM
Yea ... I should quit making them ...    ... I have ...
The 10 or so I made ... I lost like 6 ... the lighter bend in the 2 welds was great, but steel started behaving more and more inconsistently with the tighter bend, the tubing was collapsing, it was spreading in the perpendicular direction ... and of course the bounce back was un predictable and in consistent as well ... which was the worst ... But In all I liked the new ones better ... But if I am doing more I'll go to the old style ... easier to make, and easier to jig up as well ... Sanding the powder ... yes that's inevitable ... maybe I can mask off the parts where switches go ... but if you sand it usually you can leave a small layer of coating on it and it protects it too ...
Cool.
Srinath.

OK ginoe - Your total will be $42 since no shipping costs ... yea I wish everyone could pick up ... I'll set up a lemonade style stand and be done in 20 mins ... Instead it now takes 3 hours to send out 10 ... yikes.
Milo - You got it from jetswing didn't ya ... OK the old type (offset flanges) dont have old or new ... anything on any year bike ... new ones only where some were sliced too short ironically on jetswing's 95 ... when it had no foot pegs and brake lever ... so I had to have older GS'es cut their header pipes an inch or so longer and fit the flange a inch further back ... new GS'es have headers that get larger dia 2 inches from the weld on the bottom ... so no option there, the new flange had to have that extra inch length cos you cant move the slip fit any where. So you're fine milo ...
Cool.
