Title: A couple newbie questions.
Post by: sink on May 05, 2005, 12:24:14 PM
I just got a 1990 GS500E last week with 15008 miles and it's in pretty good condition. Now my questions, first I need to change my hand grips from the crappy foam ones, what are some better ones that some of you guys are using, and where is a good place to buy them online? Also I noticed some of you guys have smaller turn signals that don't stick out 6 inches from the bike, can I get some replacements or is it custom work? One more question where can I get a small fairing for the front that changes the headlight and has a small windshield I've seen pictures but can't find where to buy them? Sorry for the paragraph, but I searched already and couldn't find my answers. By the way great site!!!!! :)

Welcome!

I prefer rubber grips to foam, because they last longer and I ride in the rain alot, I curently have Lockhart-Phillips Superbike grips that I purchased from my local motorcycle accessory shop. I used the phone book to find a shop, but others here will chime in on the best online places.

Turnsignals - depending on your local laws, if you're just going for looks, just leave them off; personally I want other drivers to see my turnsignals, so if anything make sure they're bright enough to be seen in daylight. I'm using Yamaha FZ700 replacements from Tucker-Rocky.

The foam ones you have aren't stock.  The stock ones are rubber.  You just need to buy a pair that fit your bars- 3/4 inch?  Someone else knows.
Most people buy the Buell blast turn signals.
For a streetfighter look, many people get acerbis.  Dual headlights with a tiny flyscreen that barely covers the speedo and tach.

I was looking at new grips too, but I've got a lot of other issues to tackle first on my bike.  Like the motor.  But Denniskirk.com has grips, or at least the have them in the catalog.  So I think you'll need 7/8 " grips.  Just about any of them will do, depending on your taste.

As for your other questions, there is some fairings available at www.wildhairaccessories.com.  But they cost a ton.  Also look on e-bay.  A lot of guys here are fitting the Acerbis Blitz endro number plate and headlight on there bikes.  I like that look.  Also, some guys get the "Raptor" from UK, but I've heard mixed reviews.  But scout e-bay for them.

I believe that you can either replace your blinkers with aftermarket ones pretty easy.  You can also shorten the stalks on your blinkers by cutting them and re-fitting them.
