Title: Bike won't start... sometimes
Post by: iandunn on May 05, 2005, 07:50:34 PM
I thought I had my starting problems solved when I added a new battery (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=148355).

The bike sat for two days and when I tried to start her this afternoon she roared to life. So, I rode her to work and she sat for five hours and now she won't start. The battery read 12.7V after trying to start her a few times, now it's at 12, but it doesn't sound like that's the problem.

Usually charging the battery and adding starting fluid gets her going. She runs fine once she's running and usually starts ok, but sometimes just won't start at all. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? What's the lowest amount of voltage needed to start?

Would I be able to bump start her in this situation? What situations does that work in, and how do you do it?

Thanks...  :dunno:

Sounds to me like the choke is not working properly.  Search the forum for "choke". You  may get some ideas on how to trouble shoot it.

I added starting fluid and she started right up.

My choke cable isn't working, but I've been pushing the lever on the carbs manually, so I don't think that's the problem.

Whenever it won't start adding starting fluid seems to get it started, what does that indicate?

It's not getting fuel.

Could be from any number of reasons, from the gas tank, gas tank valve, frame mounted petcock, associated fuel lines and vacuum line from carb to frame mounted petcock. Or even the start ckt within the carb.

Maybe one of the carb gurus will chime in here to help out.
