Title: lowering front end
Post by: vdb on May 06, 2005, 06:44:25 AM
I bought lowering links for my GS500, but need to know how to lower the front end.  Directions would be helpful!

Thanks, Vanessa

The front of the bike needs to supported to reduce the amount of weight on the forks. The center stand and a jack under the front of the motor will do the job. Hanging the bike from above is another way. A front stand that supports the bike under the steering stem is the easiest but not something you may have.

Loosen the bolts on the upper and lower clamps on one of the forks. Depending on how much weight is still on the front end, the tubes may slide up on their own or you may need to twist them a little to get them to rise up. Once it is at the height desired then clamp it down and repeat on the other tube.

It can done while on the side stand if the right tube is raised first and the clamps are loosened slowly.

Also, try to move both legs evenly up through the triple clamps so as not to bend the axle.

Thats how I lowered mine, but I had the "upright position" handlebars that would be in the way of the forks (unless youre only lowering it 1cm or less)... so I bought clipon bars, and now theres no restriction from the bars at all..

you can drop the forks about 7/8" before they touch the bars.  Just make sure they are dropped the exact same distance.
