Yea, they'll recover for now, but later in life they'll be hurting.

Keep in mind that nerve damage occurrs when the swelling starts. Very possibly one if not both could have suffered nerve damage from this most truly stupid escapade.

They would have demanded to be seen immediately, over anyone else who may be just as unwell but not self-inflicted.
