Title: Good rides in NoVA
Post by: MrDan on May 18, 2005, 11:23:58 AM
Anyone have any suggestions for places to ride/good roads in the Northern VA area?  Riding with a buddy leaving from Centreville and want some place to go.  Last week we took 55 West and ended up in Front Royal (about 50 miles away).  Was fun, but the return trip (at 11:30pm) we tucked on Rt 66 and that wasn't much fun.

So I need good ideas - looking for something a little twisty but doesn't have to be insane.

Thoughts?

You do, who did you buy the bike from?

I was starting to get more involved in DC cycles when I lived there in 2000-2001.  I think they're mailing list has dropped off a lot and most of the experienced guys are either track only or no longer ride or organize public internet rides (imho with good reason, since the levels of experience and maturity in internet rides is a huge problem)

Hope you have fun.   I would head to West Virginia if I were you but its been a while since I've been in the area and I would only get you lost if I tried to give you a loop.

Bought if from Corey G (he might not want me giving his name out).  Actually my first small group ride was to the WV side of Harpers Ferry for some camping.  I live in MD but my bike is garaged in Tysons so that's where I head out from.  I actually found some good loops at http://www.dccycles.com/ridesheets.htm so that should be a good start for now  8)

the area in and around White's Ferry has tons of great roads.  Cross the American Legion bridge and take the first exit (towards great falls).  It will turn into falls road, eventually.  Take a Left on River Rd. and take that all the way to the end.  Lots of back roads to choose from.

Then you can take White's Ferry across the river ($3 cash) and either head north/west to Harper's Ferry, or south into Leesburg and back towards Tysons Corner.

I live in Bethesda.  There's a couple other MD riders around.  Post in the "MD Riders" thread in the Meet& Greet if you want to set up a ride, and check every now and then to see if people are heading out.  My bike is still in pieces, but I should be back out an about the beginning of June.

^^ Awesome - thanks man.  I may hit up Whites Ferry Saturday morning.  Want to see how many miles I can get in before I head to Annapolis for a wedding haha

Oh yeah - how long does the Ferry take?
