I'm looking for a bike to learn how to ride on. I'm 16 and I've ridden on the back of a dirtbike a few time, so I think I've pretty much got everything down. I was thinking about a 2005 Honda RC51. It looks like a fun and cool first bike. What do you guys think about it?
Not big enough. You need a Rocket III.
For you because of your skill level I'd recommend a Suzuki 1300 Busa.
But that's just because you've got so much experience.
rc51 + 16 year old having ridden a dirtbike a couple times.......sorta equals not to bright. look for a smaller bike. I wouldnt even get a gsxr600 as a first bike, especially at 16. look for a bandit or gs. They are more than enough for most people. liter bike a new riders dont mix. even experienced riders can be owned by one if not careful.
don't listen to those guys...rc51 is a perfect bike for you!
btw, come back and tell us how the pavement taste like... :thumb:
Welcome!
I second the Rocket III, areseefifdeewon's have cooling problems. And are Hondas. Honda owns whaling ships.
What you need to do is take the seat off your bicycle, insert about a 50 HP vibrator into the frame, sit on that and pedal around for a couple of hours. If you haven't fallen off yet and your ass is not bleeding then you're ready for the RC51.

Your kidding right?
Grasshopper, when you can snatch the pebble from my hand then it is time for you to ride RC51. Love the Baby GS, Tennessee (it's as far from one tip to the other as it is to Canada), and this forum.

Better yet, since you are bound to drop your bike, get something used like a Kawasaki H2.
what the displacement and horses on an RC51? i saw one today close up and it looked like a small bike.

Is that some sort of insult to my beloved country? lol.

The Fitty Won, I like them almost as much as the Buells. Here's a link to a comparison of it against an Aprilia and a Ducati:

Click on "bike tests" and roll down to right column; V-twin shootout.
Love the little twin, Canada (it's as far from Canada to Tennessee as it is from one end of Tennessee to the other), and this forum.

Check the search function, grasshopper. There's a guy on here with a Superhawk that (defying all laws of physics) tops out at 240 mph--perfect starter bike. I'm sure he'd be willing to sell it to you.

yeah then after you get the busa, you should turbo it :)

you know, that's interesting. i was under the impression (i think from my msf class) that the majority of mc accidents are single-vehicle... i guess i was wrong

mmm turbo busa is niceh! vrrrrrooooom pssshhhhh
I rode my friends rc 51 and I had to turn around after the first couple of minutes cause it's a HUGE bike!
Grasshopper..... have you got the point yet??!
We all (I think) hope you ARE really kidding.
Be safe - make a smarter decision...please.

:bs: Alright you got me. I was just testing the waters to see how bad I could get assaulted by you guys... I thought you guys would lay into me a little harder than that though - But I'm glad to see that you care enough to discourage a new rider from a bike like that... very commendable! I actually have a GS and am very happy with it - great bike and lots of fun. I wouldn't even dream of getting on a bike like the RC51 until I had at least a few years experience. Thanks for being such a great group of people. By the way, I'm nearly 30... not the 16 as claimed.... Now please don't :guns: me!

well, a typical 16 year old never go for a rc51 anyway...
Aw, and I was going to suggest you lengthen the swingarm on the turbo 'busa so you couldn't turn.
Have cash? Buy a chopper.

Reading that changed my mind about a bunch of things...
I
wasn't going to take the MSF class... :nono: I
was going to ride around
without a moto-endorsement... :nono: I
was going to get a 3/4 helmet... :nono: I
wasn't going to get a motorcycle jacket... :nono:
Good thing I read it... I guess I'm not as smart as I thought! ;)
yeah... it states "24. The motorcycle riders involved in accidents are essentially without training; 92% were self-taught or learned from family or friends. Motorcycle rider training experience reduces accident involvement and is related to reduced injuries in the event of accidents. "
but fails to elaborate the percentage of people on the road that are self or family taught... if that were 92" (which i doubt it is) as well... than the couses would hold no advantage
I'm not saying MSF is bad... I took it and I'm glad I did... you just have to read into statistics like these before you make your decisions.
I've been riding since '86, self-taught, did California Superbike School in '88, and raced in '90; the MSF course I took in '93 was the best thing that ever happened in my riding career.
Just for fun, I'm going to say, "He who lives by statistics, will die a statistic".
I'd been riding a little before the class... But, I have to say that it was GREAT to take the class... I was doing several things wrong and would have ended up a statistic for sure.
Hey, good news for all you speed freaks; it says the one in a thousand occurance of accidents is over 85 mph! Keep flyin' in the wind, only one in a thousand of ya is gonna bite it. :) Love the motorcycle we call the GS500, Louisiana (do cops there really look for out of state vehicles?), and this forum.

I had a feeling this post was a joke from the start when I saw that the person's username was "grasshopper". That just seemed too ironic for me.
I'll be on the lookout for grasshopper at Laguna Seca racing with the big boys!!
just...lame...
'hee hee lets see what this forum says when i say im sixteen and want a liter bike!! hee hee!'
sorry, that just seemed useless...could tell it was a fake right from the very beginning...why post asking about a rc51 in a gs forum?!?
meh... :guns:
