Title: I searched.. but yes another fork spring question
Post by: billdapart on May 21, 2005, 11:59:30 AM
Sorry guys I know this has been covered umpteenth times..

Problem is.. I take out stock spring.. the lazy way.. and I install left progressive spring..fork oil.. no problem..

open up right fork and.. umm.. the thing on top of the spring looks just like the thing that I thought was the spring seat on the bottom of the other one..

So now I'm worried. Have I installed the spring seat and or washer in the wrong order? Is the original washer in the bottom of the right hand fork? Will I only be able to tell if I did it wrong by taking the forks completely apart?

The thing I thought was the spring seat and put in the bottom on the left hand fork could have been wrong I guess..(doesn't seem likely.. looked like a seat rather than a washer to me-flange and everything) Will that part effect or damage the fork in some way?

Does anybody have any more pics of the insides of the forks? I've got the clymer and I have pantablos page up but I'm kinda still worried/stumped.

Anyway.. I gotta go to a meeting for a couple hours, then it's back to working on the bike.. gotta get it running again now since my car bit the big one last night.

Thanks guys. Love the baby GS, girls who can dance like nerds and this forum.

well it sounds like your talking about the spacers, and they go on top of the springs, so if you put the right one back together with it in the top you should be fine, and if that dosn't work, see sig line

thanks davipu.. yeah I've been reading/wathcing your posts (as well as all the others) for a while.. and I say  :nono:

No the spacers are huge.. and i'm installing progressives with the schedule 40 endcap spacers.. the washer/spring seat .. combo is what's worrying me.. Not sure what order they should be in exactly and i just don;t want to do too much damage to the ride that needs to be reliable for the next couple weeks.
:dunno:

Anybody else?

but thanks again Davipu.. at least now I have someone I can blame if I do it wrong.  :nana:

Thanks Kerry.. that's exactly what I needed.

And..crap..I did the other one wrong. I just realized (yes I'm this stupid) I used the spring seat washer on the bottom and a washer for the stock bar end (what!) on the top.. doh! I hope I didn't lodge the damn thing in the bottom like I feel I did...jeez-o.. I'll keep you guys posted..probably depending on how many more incredibly stupid things I do.

thanks fellas.
