Found a good reason to keep a spare key.
4 days looking for the $%@*ing the key to my GS.
3 hours yesterday finding a locksmith that could get to me this week.
6 hours today waiting for late locksmith to show up.
70 dollars later, I have 2 keys and a weeks worth of rain heading my way.
Spare keys are good.
:x

Sorry about the hassel with the key. My local hardware store made me copies. They used an ilco X179/SUZ12 blank for the 2000 GS. They have a smaller head than the OEM key, but work fine. Anytime I ride, I put a spare key in a pocket. Just a precaution if I have a problem.
my local hardware store said they cant do it. i know they have the ilco brand so im goin back tomorrow :) thanks!
Glad to pass on the info. As I recall, my hardware store didn't have a cross-list for the GS key. They just kept looking and matched up a blank.
they go by the template code....home depot did not carry it. i got mine at walmart but it didn't open the gas tank and the seat. worked fine in the ignition.
My copies are working fine on the seat and tank. Make sure they buff up the new copies extra good on the wire wheel. It often makes a big difference on getting copies to work on a tight lock. My seat and tank are a tighter fit than the ignition. I suspect that is because of the more frequent use of the ignition.
thats the same for me. too tight if i say so
UPDATE: Ok so they made a key that will start the bike. that is all it will do. Will not lock or unlock the bars. That is kinda bad as I have to leave it outside. Went today for another round of key making to sort that out. Still no luck :( I have now taken the triple tree off so that I can get the whole lock assem out. I am really running out of happy, happy, joy, joy feelings today. Well Ill try again tomorrow.
Had a great ride today. Went out with another local rider and ripped up the twisties. That made up for alot of bad until his bike fell over at a coffee house and knocked mine over :( Anyone know how much its going to cost me for a rightside handle bar and front brake lever for an 89? Im on a very fixed income for a while and I am sure this is going to hurt a bit.
Mike
Another good reason to have a spare key is, I just bent a key closing the gas tank. So make sure that you don't close the gas tank with the key! It will bend rather easily!
Lucky after fidling for 5 mintues I was able to get the key to turn the bike on.. But I thought I was stuck at the gas station.
