Alright...well i have this new 05 GS500F and I love it. But i'm paranoid being a new rider that i'm gunna screw it up. I don't want to go to the dealership for everything, so i'm hoping u guys can help me out. The bike takes a long time to warm up, and once it is, it sometimes "chugs" for the first part of first gear. After that its fine, but being a brand new bike, I'm kinda worried. :? is this normal? Also the neutral light wasn't working right the other day. Being a new rider, i still depend on it a lot. Any advice? Oh ya one more thing I'm getting around 190 km to a tank b4 the reserve, is that good? :dunno:
Thanks :thumb:
Is it cold up there? :) Yeah the GS chugs alittle bit below 3000-4000 rpms...
Welcome to the board
Its not too bad right now. About 13 degrees today, it was 22 on Saturday, and its going to 20 tommorow, but still chillin today for riding and i think i have to ride home in the rain. It stops chuging after the 1st time in first gear, but what about the gas and neutral?
190km sounds ok.. depends on how you ride.. for brand new bike.. should be fine!
what's wrong with neutral light? blown?
just call dealer if you have problem.. you paid for the warranty and service!
I bought my first bike, a 2004F last year and remember having a problem with the neutral too --It almost seemed hard to find ... or I would find it then it would bump off... But surprisingly it went away with practice
I dont know but 190km seems like you are missing a good chunk of tank. The dealership fill it up for you the first time? Maybe they were a little shy of a full tank?
I think I can get a bit more than 300km out of my tank before getting wimpy and having to fill it.
300km?? wait, how big is the tank of F compared to E? For every 200km, I put in close to 9.xx litre.. easy mix city and hwy riding.
The tank capacity on an F is 20 litres.
You should be getting between 250 - 280 km per tank full, regardless of your riding style. If you fill the tank up to the top, that should be your full 20 litre capacity. (I get at least 20 km/litre for urban riding, cold weather with idle time for warm-up.)
As for taking a while to warm up, I have the same problem. Lately it's been about 8-10 Deg.C in the morning, and even though I let the bike idle for 3-5 minutes before I take off, I still run about a third to half choke (or should I say enrichment) for another 3-5 minutes of riding. By then I can take the choke all the way off and I'm up to temperature.
Such is life with air-cooled, carburetor-equipped bike motors.
i can easily go 300+km before going to reserve...
When i bought the bike, I'm pretty sure the stats said it was a 12 litre tank, i could be wrong, but maybe they changed it on the 05.
Nope. 20 litres.

Figure out your Neutral light issue?
Ride safe.

i have a 2004F and yeah the first time outta first it kinda feels like its laggin, but once I get er up to like 3K and back down it usually is pretty good at not feeling like its going to stall. I think warm up time for these newer F's might be a lil higher (fairings possibly?) since on a somewhat warm day I still need like 2 or minutes sometimes and then able to let the choke out.

I've gone up to 325km before filling and have still never had to switch to reserve. I calculated that I'm getting 74 mpg (Canadian gallon). Filled up yesterday with 275km on the trip meter and still only got 10 litres in.
The bike definitely takes a few minutes to warm up on those cooler mornings. I don't leave my driveway until I can steadily lay on some throttle without the chugging. I've already dumped the bike once at a stop sign when I stalled on the pull-away. I don't recommend that :?

it's because you are running lean from the factory. It's normally to help pass emissions. you can solve this by at least turning out the mix screw, at best rejetting the bike.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the GS!! :)
I rode my GS all winter long and on days when it was cold I had to let the bike warm up at full choke for like 5 minutes! The GS is very warm blooded.
Try setting the idle up to about 1400-1500rpm - that should help with your warm up times.
Shimming the needles will also do wonders.
