my 2000 gs500e does not have markings for reserve or fuel on it. which way should it be for fuel and reserve.

On my 2001 it's:

ON - when the knob is pointing down.
REServe - when the knob is pointing up.
PRIme - when the knob is pointing to the rear of the bike.[/list:u]I don't thin it changed between years.

on mine (2000) its down-on, up-prime, sideways-reserve

Yep, it changed with the '01 model. For the visual learners out there, I finally got the bright idea to annotate a couple of my photos:

It would be a good idea. I think I got registered to this forum not even 3 weeks now & I saw the same question show up a few times, including one from myself.
