Title: Tank Capacity: 17 litres? Who hid something in my tank!
Post by: marc on May 25, 2005, 02:11:22 AM
I can read in the specs that the GS500 tank has 17 litres of
capacity, with a reserve of 3.5litres.
That leaves 17-3.5=13.5 litre.

When I visit my gas station just after turning to RES, I can get
10.5 litres to the tank, and moving the fuel I can put 1 more litre,
that's 11.5 litres for a total fill.

Where are these 2 litres remaining?
This is the size of a pack of 6 cans of cocacola!
Somebody hid a pack of cans in my tank?

How do you guys get 300Km from 15 litres?

This is for a '91GS500.

This monday I tested my tank capacity. I stopped in the middle of nowhere with a dry empty tank. I filled 5 litres from the fuel can, and another 10 litres at the station 3km-s away. There was space for another litre at least.

I get about 11L from hitting reserve to a full tank, I've never emptied the tank to check how much reserve I have.

I have heard that different eras of tank have different amounts of reserve capacity.
I also heard thet you can't use the last 1/2 to 3/4 of a litre even on prime.
I would be tempted to remove the tank mounted fuel tap and lower the level of the main intake tube if I did much long range driving.

I currently get about 130 - 140 miles before hitting reserve on open roads.
A little less if I'm pushing the speed limit and far less when I'm commuting through city traffic jams (about 80 - 90 miles to reserve).
These figures are probably not helped by having a 15 tooth front sprocket.

Yay for google and easy conversions!

When I fill up after hitting RES (I don't think that the gas tank is different on the US models) I put in around 11.356 L (3 US Gal).

Sounds like you have a pretty normal tank to me.

Yeah, that's pretty much where I stand, too. I just wonder if the Suzuki engineers need to replace their volume meters...

And too bad they made the engines at different department... with correct measures! :)
