Title: Why is Neutral inbetween 5th and 6th?
Post by: CanadianGS on May 30, 2005, 10:28:10 AM
Ok, i know where neutral actualy is, but why is it that when i'm racing around, and shifting properly, the bike gets "stuck" in between gears? :dunno:   Its a bad thing, cuz one sec i'll be just flyin, the next red line'n, then it will catch, and take off without me expecting it.  Luckily I have been smart enough to be quick on the clutch, so I don't bring the front tire over my head! :o
Any ideas what is happening, or what I can do to fix / prevent this?

I'd say you're NOT shifting properly to get a false neutral.  Try to pre-load the shifter before actually shifting and see if that helps.  Also, don't sit so close to the tank.  I sometimes don't shift "all the way" when my wife is on the back and I'm pushed too far forward.

Ja, I don't think you're getting a good shift in.  If you're trying to go fast, you might be shifting too hurriedly - get the clutch all of the way in, shift in a single solid motion, then let the clutch out.  It sounds like you're not getting it all of the way in, or starting to let the clutch out before you're solidly in gear, or some combination thereof.

Preload...

Well to me that means putting a little pressure on the shifter with your toes.

That way when you shift it slips into gear a bit easier.

Takes a while to get a feel for it,
too much pressue and when you shift you might skip a gear.

can-gs... make sure you dont sit to far back b/c it'll throw off the bikes handling ability. One of the many things I was corrected on this past weekend

easyer solution, pull the bolt for the shifter, slide shifter off the shaft, then angle down a few teeth and slide back on, only go about 2-3 teeth, you should be  right as rain.

I had the same problem for a while...  Just between 5th and 6th...  I just couldn't get it in... to 6th.

I figured out that I was trying to shift too fast AND wasn't getting a full throw because I was too far forward in the seat.
