Need to change my oil in a bad way, since I haven't looked around lately, what's the latest preferred lube for our GS's these days. I have used silcolene 10W40 in the past, just curious other options.

I use Amsoil. It's great for wet/dry clutches ...

cool but aren't we supposed to avoid synthetic oils since the GS has a wet clutch. Amsoil isn't available over the counter is it?

I pick up Amsoil at Canadian Tire -- A Wallmart-type chain here in Canada. You should be able to get it at any automotive department.

Some people will argue performance in synthetic vs. non-synthetic -- but Amsoil claims "Excellent Wet Clutch Performance" on their website (this was actually the selling point for me when I picked up my first bottle)

Since my bike is an 04' I really can't tell you the long-term affects but I'm throwing an uneducated guess that there won't be too many problems that will pop up.

It is all personal preference, just do not use energy saving.

I did have a clutch slip when I switched to synthetic, but then I did not know how much wear was on it. No problems with the kevlar Barnett clutch and synthetic.

Nope. Billions of wet clutch motorcycles are running around with synthetic. Mobil 1 15W-50 is a popular choice. Diesel-rated oils are also popular, either Mobil 1 5W-40 or Rotella 5W-40 are both nice too. In conventional Rotella 15W-40 is a good, low-cost option.

my triumph uses mobile1 full synthetic from the factory... it has repsol full synthetic in it now...

it has a wet clutch... and i will be using full synthetic on the gs500 too...

6000 mile oil changes are nice... :)

Sure, 6000 mile oil changes are nice but not at those costs. I could do a traditional oil change about every 2000 miles and it would cost me the same as yours. One can of synthetic oil costs what a whole oil change would cost with regular cheap oil.

Personally, I don't think synthetic is worth the cost in our loose tolerance, dirty, air cooled engine. To me, it's better to change it more often with ANY oil and get the crap out.

Wow I have been changing my oil every 1500 km ... w/ synthetic. :lol:
