I'm thinking about buying a 98' GS 500, but it's been dropped on the right side engine cover and doesn't run, the guy says it just needs a new pickup coil and cover... does this sound right?
It seems like a good deal ($1200) but it has 19k miles... and I'm kinda warry of buying a bike that doesn't run....
What do you guys think? anything I should look for? etc.? thanks a lot.
I look forward to joining your ranks... if not with this bike another :)
if its the one talked about in this post:

then no, i bought mine for 400 and only needed to transfer parts from track frame to titled frame, buy battery and gauges to put it on the street, granted, thats an exception, but a nice shape used 98 turn key 500 ready to ride down the road would run about 1200, baring its got a clean title, no lein, salvage, rebuilt BS

Depends on where you live -- a clean, running 98 in the midwest/northeast would sell for closer to 16-1700 (and they're apparently rarer than hen's teeth)

True. But this sounds like L.A. Even in Minnesota, a non-running '98 would probably go for half that ($800-$850). And getting only a Lien Bill of Sale (instead of a clear title) would make it worth $600... and only if the buyer is the trusting sort.
I'd rather have a well-maintained '89 for $1000 in Minnesota (or $800 everywhere else) than a crashed, non-running '98 for $800. If the poster is in L.A., and wants a deal, then I'd look for decent condition, any year, less than $1k.
Even in LA, you can get a running bike for $1200. I'd talk him down or go for a different one...
To me a non running gs that is a simple bolt on fix like carbs, starter, coils, things of that nature if super clean and nice is about 800-1000
If average shape its about 600-800
If anything other then a clean title on average shape non turnkey bike its worth parts bike cost of 200-400. Basically the cost of an engine.
Being a Lien title he doesnt OWN the bike, he is merely paying on it, the Creditor owns it and the papers, split it down the line he legally cant sell it.
you might make a deal with the bank and tell them where the bike is and the repo man can get it for you. but then, thats just dirty.
QuoteThe bike comes with lien sale bill of sale
Screw that man... For that much money?
No way... You can get a better deal than that.
Lets start at around 450 and possibly if its in great condition go to 550.
You can find a nice running gs for 1200. You can find a non-running, but with minor issues gs(dead battery, gummed up carbs from sitting) for 800.
There was one in Long beach going for 800 like that about 2 weeks ago.
Some of the "deals" on craiglists are fueled by total crackheads. I got my gs in perfect condition (read perfect paint, never down, starts first time every time) with 10k for 1600 and i don't even consider that a good deal. I just wanted a bike for the summer badly enough to pay that much.
Peace
