I just bought a '96 GS500 that is need of some TLC. As I was changing the oil I discovered the bottom bolt shaft holding the oil filter cap on is sheared off. Is this replaceable? How? (without costing a lot of money) :(
you take the filter cover off. if it is sticking out far enough take a pair of vice grips and get it out, and then go to the hardware store and find a bolt with the same thread pitch and diameter and put it in there. when you tighten it down pust the cover down all the way and put the other two nuts on and torque them to spec. then while holding the cover down to take the spring pressure off of the bolt, using a socket on a 3" extention spin it down finger tight to whare it gets tight, and when you release the pressure on the cover it dosn't move. then go abut 1/8 turn to torque it. if it devolopes a oil leak then you have two options,
1/ take the cover off clean the sealing surfaces and try again, going just a little tighter.
2/ RTV on the sealign surfaces.
Thanks,
I'll give it a try.
