Title: Most miles you seen on a GS?
Post by: Pinoy21337 on June 03, 2005, 05:01:22 PM
What's the most miles you ever seen on a GSE?  I have 16,500 miles on my 95gse and was wondering how many miles until it is considered a high milage engine?  And is the 2005 GSE just as fast as my 95 gse?

I"ve got about 18k on my '00
That's nowhere near 80k, but I just thought I'd chime in.

Yep, got a little over 80k on the 97 GS500E now and the 02 GS500 is finally past 24k miles.  It had about 4k on it when I bought it so I finally have 100k miles on GS500s since I bought the 97 new in March of 99.  How about a 100K GS500 club?  :thumb:

Would be very exclusive club since most move up to bigger and better (in their opinion:-) bikes long before they get that many miles in.

Jack, what type of upkeep have you had to do on your high mileage engine?

13,700 on my '93, bought it used end of last summer.

Jack, did you have to tear down the engine at any point in it's 80k?

sprint and LQueen, just routine maintenance all the way on the 97 with 80k miles on it.  I broke it in on dino juice and switched to the 15W-50 Mobil 1 oil at about 5k miles.  Never added oil between 3k oil changes till past 50k miles.  Checked valve clearance about every 8k miles after first check and didn't change a shim till about 40k miles.  The 2 intake valves have never had shim changes, but the exhaust valves have and one exhaust valve shim is now the minimum size.  Since this is now my winter bike and only gets about 1k miles per year now, I prolly won't check them or change them again while I have it.  Should last till I'm 80.   :thumb:

The 02 GS is a different story though.   :(   It apparently came from the factory with a valve bucket that was too tight and it would hold one exhaust valve open when cold.  I let it go since it would loosen up in 30 sec and run just fine till I started it up one very cold day last winter and the valve stuck open and broke the head off when hit by the other valve and/or the piston.  Had to tear it down and replace the valve and now expect it will run as far as the 97 did.

Changed the 97 to Delvac 1300 15W-40 heavy duty oil at about 60k miles and have used the 15W-40 in both bikes since.  They run cooler with the 15W-40 dino juice than the 97 did with the 15W-50 synthetic and will run on lower octane gas without knocking/pinging.  Will not use 15-50 or 20-50 in air cooled bikes again.

Is that the dino or synthetic flavor of Devlac?

Dino juice, about $7 a gallon at Walmart or auto parts store.

One thing is ... 80K mostly highway and long ride miles ... big ... huge difference ... I saw this car with like 700,000 miles Older Maxima ... ran like a swiss watch ... all highway ... no stop and go, no constant errands ride 3/4 mile and stop ... then 3/4 mile back ... Its those starts and stops that will kill the motor ... a 3/4 mile up and back will do more damage than a nice  300 mile run on mostly highway with not much slowing and accelerating ... as a commute beater ... my 48K miler had numerous shim swaps from 15K, lots of oil useage since 10K, various busted crap (Mainly intake manifold at 15K, CCT at 25 and crank triggers at 35) ... Commutes are murder on these ... short rides are worse and that casual run around the block and stop ... total 3 minutes ... its a motors equivalent of a double bacon cheese burger ...
Cool.
Srinath.

Over 20,000 on my 2002.
Runs great.  Fair amount of the mileage commuting to Manhattan.
Routine maintenance.  Some minor oil leaks.
I ignore them unless they get bad.
Original brakes, clutch etc.
Just tires and chain up to this point.
I really push this puppy.  Never complains.
Engine likes to be reved and loves that Castrol GTX 10-40.

Could be lonely, potentially be just you and Srinath for a while, Jack.  Perhaps someone that picks up a hand-me-down GS500 somewhere in the world will pipe in.

I know what you mean about trading in.  Guess we all have varying levels of fickle, most more so than others.   ;)

Oh, don't be expecting me for a while -- I'm approaching 8K, and put less than 4K of "pleasure riding" on in a year -- hardly an Iron Butt.  :)

Go here: http://www.ducatimeccanica.com/oil.html . And if you don't like reading.  ;) Use synthetic and change the oil every 1,000 miles.

I have > 24,000 miles on my '90 GS.

Thanks.  :)

Change synthetic every 1K....riiiight.

I've got 24K on my '00.  Davipu's '02 was the highest I've seen in person at 23K, but I've since surpassed that as he's up in OR again being a hick.

I'm trading mine in...going older and bigger, and hoping to get down to the same weight as the GS is now with double the power.

'95-6 Duc 900SS/SP.

^^ If what Srinath says is true then I'm burning my candle at both ends. Live in urban neighborhood with a stop sign every 100 feet. Lots of rapid acceleration and stop'n'go, now at 11,130mi. Ah well...

^ re mp183... ahhh... riding a GS in Manhattan. That would rank in my top 1 or 2 ride locations for the GS... dreamworthy.

Hey, I went from unknown (previous owner's) oil, to Torco 10w40, now to Suzuki 10w40, is there any consensus whatsoever on oil brands, and is Suzuki crappy stuff? I would go with whatever, synthetic etc, if it's a proven advantage.

The cheapest 10w40 you can find.

Synthetic oil is a hotly debated issue. There are those who will say that it makes your engine leak (which it can, if there was a preexisting leak caked up with deposits from dino oil.)

And there are those who use it with good results.

Low friction synthetics have been reported to cause clutch slipping, but then again there are those who use "energy-saving" auto oils in their motorcycles with good results.

aaronstij's approach is not a bad one, especially if you do a lot of riding and keep maintenance schedules religiously (i.e.the oil does not get too old in your GS)

No thanks!

The cheapest 10W-40 API SM rated oil possibly!

Synthetics are fine, but I wouldn't recommend Energy Conserving oils.

I use Castrol Edge Sport 10W-60 full synthetic Auto oil and change it every 3-5000 km's.

I had 48K on the 89, put 40K myself. I had a 90 I put ~7K on from 98-2000. The #3 through 7 GSes have not had much miles from me. So I am getting on at the 50K GS mile level.
However I have 15K on a savage across 2 savages, 25K on a Virago 535 across 2 again, 10K on nighthawks across 3, 10K on virago 1100's, 10K on eli 1000's, 10 K on katana's across 2, 5K on a ninja 600, and a host of others under that 5K like the VX800, the SV 650, the 454, the XS 650, the KZ 440 etc. I counted ~150K a few months ago on 2 wheels.
Cool.
Srinath.

my '00 has 18.5k miles on it now, 7.5k of which are mine. I love this bike, but I realize it is a GS500. It is a humble machine that only asks for scheduled routine maintenance, and in exchange it will give you dependable transportation and loads of fun. I won't waste the money on synthetic oils or high octane fuel when all the bike needs is the basics.
