Title: fuel valve on/pri/res
Post by: SS express on June 04, 2005, 11:24:35 PM
Hi-  My 2001 GS 500 has three choices for the fuel valve.  On, Pri, Res.   After running out of gas on the freeway (then putting 5.3 gallons of gas in the tank) I learned that I probably shouldn't run it in the "On" position anymore.  So which spot should I leave the valve in when it is sitting in my garage at night???  In other words, where is the "Off" position?
Thanks-SS

actualy, ON is the position you want it to run on. it is the usual/normal setting for the valve. RES is to get you to the gas station after you run out of gas on ON. PRI dumps gas into the carbs. do not use PRI unless the bike has been sitting in storage for a long time, and you can't get it started on ON.

there is no "off" on gs500s, leave it in ON for the night.

also, since there has been much talk about being nice to people, and since you are new to these boards, i will politely suggest that you use the SEARCH function of this board.  this particular topic, and many many others that you will have questions about in the near future have been covered before. (many times).

welcome to the forums

If you really had the fuel switch in the ON position as indicated in the photo below ... I would like to know how the ON and RES fuel hoses are routed from your fuel tank to the fuel switch.  (They might have been switched at some point.)

When I migrated from my Honda to the GS I too was concerned, Where's OFF?  it is actually quite simple, left in the ON position it is activated by the engine vacuum, when you shut down your engine it is effectivley switched / turned OFF.
