Title: Should I wait?
Post by: SFMoto on June 05, 2005, 10:57:20 AM
Guy has an 89 for sale with 33K miles and a salvaged titile. Not running due clutch problems and need for a battery.

Price is @ 300.00.  He says the shop quoted him $200.00 for the repair and another 35-40 for the battery.

Should I wait to invest my money on another bike?

My goal is to buy a used bike to learn on. I've done basic training at the MSF course already. Getting ancy to actually get out there on my own.

Please advise.

Thanks,
Rookie

How does it look?  Would you ride it as is (except the clutch)?  If so, and you don't have any experience with a bike on the street, $500 isn't bad at all to get a decent bike.  I'd do it.  You'll get valuable experience and in a year or two you can move up to something bigger and probably get back what you paid if you sell it.

BTW, the GS is cheap to maintain and you can do a LOT of the work yourself.

I haven't gone to see it as of yet. He's got other people looking at it now and I'm heading out to look at it as well. Yeah, my intention is to graduate to something else in a year anyway.  Thanks for the heads up!

Joerocker's right about cheap maintanence, and you being able to sell it for what you put into it.

I think you should be wary though, especially as a new rider.  It is DANGEROUS  to have a bike that isn't mechanically sound, expecially as a new rider.  Sure you can't beat the price, but there's a reason the bike is so cheap.  I guess I'm just trying to say be careful.

Well, guess it wasn't time just yet.  Got there late and bike was already sold. Guy didn't even call me. A wasted trip perhaps but maybe not.

Guess I'll have to continue looking.
