Title: My new Digital Tach/speedo/Gear indicator/Shift light.
Post by: stefman722 on June 06, 2005, 05:20:21 PM
Hey guys,

I had purchased my new toy 2 weeks ago and I absolutely LOVE it. Its called the Veypor, some of you might have already heard of it, but for others, its like a computer for motorcycles. Alot of ppl say that they would like a digital speedo for looks and stuff, so this might be for you. I wanted it more for looks then anything, but its been a great tool. It has so many features its nuts. What it is is a Digital speedometer and tachometer which measures your horsepower and torque, even your G-forces and even gives your HP to Torque ratios for you. It also has a Quarter mile timer, a 0-60 timer which measures ur speed, time, torque all of it which you can then upload to your computer if you like. The possibilites are endless. The hardest part of install for the unit was the install itself. Right now i only have pictures of the unit installed, but i will take picture of the installation process for you guys later on. My digital camera is shaZam! so dont diss the quality. It was quite expensive, i pad over 330$ canadian for it, but it came to my house in one day. Gotta love XpressPost shipping  :thumb: Anyways, here are pictures of the unit. Let me know what you guys think. I just LOVE the backlight. The blue is great on the eyes. The Shift light is actually a great feature, i set it to where i get the max HP. And the gear indicator for me is actually really useful as i tend to not pay attention to what gear i am in. I should, but i dont. lol. If you have any questions reguarding this just post it up.

//www.veypor.com

Thanks.

Stefan.

P.S: Once again, yes, i know my Digi Cam is very ghey. I am sorry for that. But you can get the idea of what it looks like. If you guys buy one let me know, I will give you a Referal number which you enter in when you purchase it.  :thumb:  :cheers:

******if anyone buys this, on the purchase screen where you put your credit card number, there will be box where you can put in a REFERENCE NUMBER. if any of you purchase one, PLEASE ENTER this number, The number for you put in is: "VEY2438" if you enter this number, you will AUTOMATICALLY save yourself 20$ on the purchase. So if you guys wanna save yourself 20$, enter the reference number in the field when you purchase it.   Thanks guys****

The speedo and tach light is probably one of the easiest mods ever. The bulbs in the pics are LEDs and look great at night. There is only the 2 nuts on the rear of both. The speedo has the cable in the back to take off but thats easy, just unscrew it. The veypor unit was expensive, but worth it imo. It has a built in dyno. It wasnt all that bad. It just took time, the difficulty level wasnt high. Just time consuming. I did it on the weekend. I will take pictures tomorrow for install, i got nothing to do tomorrow so ill pretty much take things apart. But w.e its all for fun  :cheers:

They have 2 different models. They have the VR2 model which is $329.99 and they have the original Veypor model which is $279.99 US. The VR2 is for serious racers that actually take the bike to the track. For me, it would totally useless.

where's the wires splice to? speedo.? tach.?

For the tach on my 2004 gs500 i could have actually spliced into the existing wire on the rear of the tach, but it wasnt very accurate, so i spliced directly at the ignition coil, and it is 110% accuarate. More so then the stock tach. The speedo is where the shitty work started, it runs off a magnet. You can install it practially anywhere really.

what about the gear indicator? where do you have to splice/mod to get that feed?

That was the easiest ever also. You don't. It practically does it on its own. It runs off your gear ratios. It's very smart. You save alot of time on the splicing or cutting for that, BUT you must configure the computer to read what gear you are in. What you do is you go in config mode, and find the Gear indicator setup. What you do is you just ride at 4500 rpms in 1st gear for 3 seconds. Then for 2,3,4,5, and 6th gear, you ride all of them at 3000 rpms for 3 seconds apiece, then saves and calculates the ratios. The gear indicator works 100%. It's always right. Worked the 1st setup, didnt need to do it again. This unit is extremely well made. The customer support for this company is unreal. They have a forum and they answer right away. The support is unreal, ive never dealt with such great ppl before. They constantly update the firmware for the unit also. They just put a new one out on june the 2nd.

Wow! If they only made a gear indicator alone or someone that made a gear indicator that was that easy to install. I just can't justify spending that much money for the main purpose of a gear indicator and a shift indicator. The other options I think I can go without.  :roll:

For those electronically challenged, (ME :dunno: ) what type of LEDs did you use? Where can i get them? Different colors? Danger of screwing up my speedo and tach if and when i mess up installing them? :x

They are 194 bulbs. I bought them at my local Canadian Tire store. I am sure you can find some at the auto stores you guys have down there. The ones i bought is blue LED 194 bulbs by Eurolite. Cost me 11$ for both and they look great.

They unit is very visible during the day. To put in in perspective, the display during the day is exactly like the display of a timex watch during the day. Same thing. You can even see the shift light during the day, Its a very bright LED.

Yeah, the HUD is cool. This company is really good. I would definitly buy something from them again. Great customer service like i said. They are a Canadian company which is cool too. They have a warehouse in the states though, that way buyers in the states dont have to wait for customs for shipping  :thumb:

Speaking of HUDs, I am actually developing a HUD for motorcycles - the name of it is motohud.  Thats right, you heard it here first.

It is still in Alpha stage right now but I hope to move it to Beta by the end of the month.  What does that mean for you, well - I will be releasing this project on SourceForge.  I have been developing the system for quite some time now so its about ready.

Here are some basic features of MotoHUD
* 320x240 LCD screen mounted inside the helmet
* Customizable GUI that displays your speed, tach, trip, and time.
* Multipurpose computer for easy expansion
* Plays music (MP3's, OGG, wav)
* Eventually GPS
* Eventually Radio chat rooms

The veypor looks pretty cool especially for a product you can purchase off the shelf; however, MotoHUD is the next step for automobile information handling.

I have a GS500F so MotoHUD will be demo'ed on it.  I'll post back when I get the project up on the web (via sourceforge).

I saw the sportvue HUD (300USD) and it looks pretty kewl.  What's the scoop on the motohud?  Where is it going to pull it's information from, or is it going to require a veypor system as well as the sportvue?

Despite the supposedly lousy camera, your new toy looks amazing!

My readings arent accurate right now because i still need to go and weigh my bike on a scale with me on it. You need to punch in the weight in the configuration for it to calculate it properly.

The short on MotoHUD is that it uses a mini-itx form factor pc.  I am actually thinking about using the nano-itx which is the latest in small form factor PCs (90mm or something like that).  Right now it gets its information similar to Veypor (magnet switch on the tire for speed). But no, you won't need a Veypor.

Yeah,

your weight for the bike is as follows

396.8lbs+your weight +12.3= total weight

The 12.3 lbs is for a half tank of gas, 396.8 is the listed weight of your bike(dry) and then tack on you weight and put that in your new device.

Cool, let me know the horsepower.

I found their email and asked for updates...  This is what they emailed back...

QuoteHello.  So the project right now has been paused waiting for OLED
display technology to mature (manufactures to start producing more
displays).  We ran into problems with LCDs obstructing the rider's
view too much due to the rigidness of the LCD screen.  OLEDs will
enable us to mount the screen directly on the windscreen due to the
flexibility of OLEDs.

So right now its just a matter of getting a display that is right for
this application.

I also have applied for the project to be put on Sourceforge but have
yet heard anything from Sourceforge.

Thanks for your interest and if you have any suggestions, please feel
free to send them.
