Title: wTFFF is wrong with my RPM tach!?!?!
Post by: allmtrslut on June 08, 2005, 12:39:36 PM
i have a 2000 gs500 with 15k miles on it, and it runs like a dream. Now when i take rides the cable that connects from the engine to the tach gets loose. so my rpm starts going ghey, and i just pull over and tighten it. but today i started up the bike, everything was fine. I tightned the cable up real right, and went for my ride. I got on the freeway....doing 70 look down at the rpm tach and its at 0. iam like wtf!! so then i make it back home and start messing with the cable, but nothing my rpm is stuck at 0. what could it be that is causing this?? could i have over tightned the  cable??

Unscrew the end that is connected to the engine.  There is a little metal piece that is crimped to the cable, if that piece is loose crush it together a bit harder and reassemble.  That might be all it is.

Mine was like that, 2 minute fix 3 years ago and its still fine.

I Pmd you, but for everyone else's knowledge...

one. disconnect the cable at both ends, turn one end and make sure the cable at the other end turns as well (That counts out the cable as being the problem.)

While the cable is off, look at the little drive shaft mechanism in the hole where the cable connects. Make sure that its turning while the bike is on. That counts out the mechanism itself.

three. make sure that the little drive shaft mechanism in the engine is ok. It should look like a flathead screw driver sitcking towards the front of the engine. If you put the cable back in without slotting it corrrectly, then you cinched it down real tight, it may have worn away that little nub to the point that there's nothing left to connect to the cable. If thats the case then you need another one of those. Should be cheap, 15 bucks or so at bikebandit.

If all else seems ok, maybe something happened to the tach, though I doubt it,. Try connecting the cable to the tach, and at the unconnected end grab use a tool to turn the inner cable really quick. See if the tach jumps while doing it.

In any case should be an easy cheap fix.

Or, first, loosen the top end of the cable and see if you can spin the square cable, you shouldn't be able to with the other end still connected to the driven end while the motor is off. Then look up into the tach guage housing to see if the hole is still square.

As I was riding to work this morning, I also noticed my tach at 0.  I checked my cable and it was disconnected.  I tried to reconnect but didn't have the right tools (not to mention it was hot as hell).
But I did my best and when I took it out for a spin at lunch, the tach started to work again.

So hopefully, my little problem is just a loose cable.

ya i figured out the problem, it slipped off the little thing on the engine side. so when i twisted it back on they were not connected. i fixed the problem and now it works just fine!!

Perfect :)   you may want to check it in another ride just to make sure the little thing wasn't compromised.  Sounds like its good to go :)

whenever I start mine up, I have to give a little tap with my knuckle on the tach for it to spin up....i don't know what that means, but it works, so for the time being I don't worry :thumb:

I remember davipu tellin me that there was a little thing that connects inside the egine where the cable goes to. you gotta loosen the cable from the bar and then jiggle it where it goes into the engine. it should catch on..kinda like a phillips head going into the grooves of a screw...anyway hope that made sense. good luck. i had the same problem and when i adjusted it, i didnt have to tap the gage anymore.    :thumb:

Yeah.... theres this thing that comes out of the engine like a flat head screwdriver bit.   then the end of the cable looks like a flathead screw head.    When you put the cable back into the engine, you need to make sure those have connected and slotted properly, or else....

a) tach won't work

or

b) the two pieces will grind.

When mine came undone I was in the middle of a ride so I just did it really quickly but didn't make sure they were slotted right.  100 miles later the two had been grinding and the piece coming out of the engine had worn down to shaved metal.  I got a cheap used one from a board member here to replace it.

Its not unfeasable that there's something wrong with the cable, but to check that you can do what I said above.  Disconnect both ends, eyeball one end while you turn the other end with some pliers (might be able to do it by hand, I forgot)

Oh also..

the piece inside the engine is called the tach driven assembly.  Its 16 in this picture

and you can see the connector coming out of the cable, # 28 here

I just had the same problem today, the fitting on the tach end had come loose....

my question is: would it be a good idea (or a bad one) to use Lock-tite on the tach end Fitting?
