Title: Road Rash
Post by: CanadianGS on June 10, 2005, 10:08:02 AM
Well its pretty damn hot right now, and I normally always wear my jacket. But w/ this heat and humidity, even when i get going its nothin but hot air!
So recently I have not worn my jacket in the city, on really hot days.  My question is:  How bad is road rash?  Whats it like, Infections etc.? :dunno:

Pretty bad.  :nono:

Wear your jacket. Trust me, it's more comfortable than rash.

They do have other types of jackets that work well in summer, but I'd wear at least a perforated leather on me.

when was the last time you skinned a knee. (go do it if you need to)  now take off about 3 more layers of skin.  the shaZam! burns worse than a sunburn that blisters up.  cracks every time you move, takes forever to heal. and those are the nice things about it.  you don't even want to know about scrubbing it out, but I'm sure Danny will tell you after he stops crying from the memory.

Wow :o I cringed at the thought of scrubbing it out!  I have an ICON Timex Jacket which is mesh! And I am still hot.  There is just something about no jacket, its light, breatheable, and that free feeling.  What do u guys/gals think is safer, highway, or city?  That is if i chose not to wear the jacket.  I am second guessing it though.

Like everyone here says it is a TERRIBLE idea to ride without protection (both motorcycles and women).  I somewhat sympathize.  I live in south GA where it is always humid and often HOT (I didn't think it got hot in Canadia).  I know it is stupid, but I ride without a jacket sometimes.  So, when it happens I'll be sure to tell you how much road rash sucks.

VersOne posted this the other day of some guy (not gory)

Another set of gory pics, JetSwing posted these 1st:

Another set of pics from another board, rash pics are after the damaged bike pics:

I don't know, I'm an ATGATT kind of guy, call me crazy.  I know riding is dangerous, but I never want to experience road rash at 30mph, let alone higher speeds.  :dunno:

Getting road rash isnt bad...of course you generally have to wreck to get it. But getting my road rash scrubbed out...god almighty that is BY FAR THE MOST PAINFUL EXPERIENCE OF MY ENTIRE LIFE. And ive broken bones tha have come through skin, ive gouged myself in the leg down to bone...and just getting a tiny bit of road rash scrubbed out...god i wished i coulda passed out. After about 10 min of scrubbing i told her to take the leg...she didnt :(.

The old saying goes - there are two types of motorcyclists; those who have been down, and those who are going to go down.  You want to have ATG on when you do.  And it can happen any time, anywhere; I was hit by a car just outside of work on a quick snack run.

Get some mesh gear, and wear it; rash is way, way, way, way, way worse than sweat.

Highway speeds with no jacket :o  I'd imagine you would be grinding bone in about a foot or two after hitting pavement.  Take morning and evening rides when it is cooler.  Of course this may not be an option when it comes to school, work, etc.  I was wearing my Alpinestars leather jacket before we got into the 90 degree stuff....now to work and back I am wearing my Alter Ego not unzipped to mesh and feel lots more vulnerable v/s the leather.

No road rash thread would be good without a link to the "How to dump your girlfriend - Part 2" pics (http://www.kontraband.com/show/show.asp?ID=1594). The first part of the stupidity can be seen here (http://www.kontraband.com/show/show.asp?ID=1593&rtn=index-alltimetopten). Note even with jeans she got pretty rashed up on her legs.

Lesson: wear your gear. The only appropriate gear she wore was a helmet and thats the only thing that did its job.

Yea from waist up i was wearin full leathers when i wrecked. My jeans ripped and a got a nice little spot of rash around the left side of my left kneed. I also waited roughly 4 or 5 hours before going to the hospital to find out I had a separated shoulder with torn ligaments and that the very very nice nurse now had to scrub all the rocks out of my leg.....I still cringe thinking about it, lol.

How bad? Are you kidding me?
One word... AWFUL!

Pain of road rash is worser than broken bone!
Also, you will live with your road rash for the rest of your life!
Road rash sometime becomes keloid!! I have my picture too!

I'm not one to cry, esp. in a room full of nurses... but tears were falling when they scrubbed the road grit off my rashed hip.  I couldn't take a shower for 2 weeks.

If you didnt read my story 2 months ago, read it.  I was in gear when I went down but when/if I get back on a bike, i will be wearing full leathers all the time.  You can bet on that one.

I don't know how bad it is, and I hope to not find out, if heats the issue have you been using or tried evaporatory cooling? Sticking bags of ice in your jacket pocket with holes in it, soaking your shirts and spraying the helmet liner, wrapping a wet rag around your neck area etc?  Just a thought, carrying an extra shirt and being a little wet seems better than being rashed... just a thought...

How bad is it? Try this exercise:

1) Strip down to shorts.
2)Find a large empty parking lot somewhere.
3)Put a frisbiee on one end.
4)Walk 40 yards.
5)Turn around and sprint as fast as you can towards the frisbiee.
6)Pretend your playing baseball and slide head-first to it.

There, that was road rash at 15 mph.  Wanna try 50?

I'd rather sweat than bleed.

If it's too hot to wear gear, than it's too hot to go for a ride. Passing out from dehydration while riding will get you some real good roadrash.

Okay, this isn't exactly the same as road rash but it's close.  A guy on my softball team slid into second with shorts on.  Exposed skin meets dirt and gravel = ouch.  His leg got infected and had to be srubbed out with a scrub brush and iodine.  He said it was the worst pain he's ever experienced to the point of almost vomiting.

All I wear is a textile mesh jacket and have been considering getting some pants to wear also.  Time will tell.  Step one is getting the bike on the road.

look at it this way, i had a seperated shoulder with torn tendons while they were scrubbing it out. I was using this arm to cover my face, kidna grunting into my arm before i told her to take the leg, lol. I seriously could not even feel the pain in my arm.

The one time I had a bad wreck with no gear was pretty gruesome. I had to have grafts on my left arm...it was down to the bones and ligaments. There were a lot more injuries (thought I might lose the left foot) but the left arm was not fun. And like Davipu says, everytime you move it breaks back open...in your sleep you hit it and wake up screaming. Like everybody says; wear the gear ATT. 'Course you have the right to wear shorts and sandals and a tank-top if you wish. Btw, when the guy was scrubbing my arm and stuff I finally just told him to let me do it myself...it's easier to tell when to let up just a little  :) . Love the White Owl, Five civilized tribes (Chata hapia hoke), and this forum.

it's odd, around here i'm the only rider i've seen in recent memory who wears a jacket. it's like riders in newark are alergic to protective gear.

but i've always got my jacket and helm.

i just saw a guy going the other way today on a ninja 500 wearing shorts, a tank top, sunglasses, and a backwards baseball hat.  :nono:

must be one of thoes new DOT approved baseball hats......

i have had road rash before, on my arm leg and alittle on my shoulder.  I hit an oil spot in a turn, the rash on my are was about a foot long and 4 inches wide and same on my leg.  On my shoulder it was just red and sorta scuffed not real bad.  I was wearing a regular shirt and shorts at the time, I know stupid, but i was only going about 30 and thats what happened.  I thought nobody saw me which was good, but when i pick up the bike and look around there are people that are laughing, also when I was riding back this car full of girl started making fun of me cause they saw my arm was dripping blood.     :thumb:

It's hard to see, but watch that video over and over and focus on her arms. It never looks like she is holding onto him. When she falls it looks like she's pushing herself off. Of course she's not though, because nobody's that stupid...

Road rash sucks. I had some from a bicycling accident when I was 12... (very high speed slide down a rough concrete hill, took months to heal)... enough to make me never want to experience it again.

Now, as far as that heat goes: put your jacket back on, and try this: get a cloth wet with cool water, and wrap it around your neck under your helmet/jacket. It will keep you pretty cool.

Another thing to note: when air temps get up around body temps, your body's basic cooling system doesnt really help. You'll be just as hot with the jacket on as without. Wearing a wet shirt under your jacket will help, a lot.

:-)
