Title: Question about first bike
Post by: mfajmkas on June 11, 2005, 09:47:59 PM
I know this doesnt have anything to do with a GS500, which is why its in odds and ends. Anyways I know you guys have some wisdom to offer, especially to a newbie like me.

I'm lookin at a used 1984 kawasaki GPZ 750 for my first bike. I know the 750 is a bit large for a first bike, and I'm all for playing it safe and getting a more tame bike for my first one. A friend of mine who rides was saying that being as its an 84 the 750 may still be ok for my first bike. I wanted to get some of your guys opinions, so I don't go and make a dumb decision on my first bike.

Any and all advice/information is definately appreciated.

Thanks guys
Andrew

as long as you can control yourself and learn the bike you'll be fine.
the big reason that smaller bikes are recomended as beginner bikes, is the lower HP, it makes it alot harder to get in trouble when you don't have the power to get there.

i think it depends on how much riding experience you have.
If your new to riding would definately recomend the msf course.
As a bonus they can do road test = less time at dmv (always a good thing)

You've NEVER ridden a motorcycle?

I wouldn't get a 750 if that is the case.  It's too big and heavy and has too much power.  A mid 80s bike weighs a lot.  It doesn't have the power that a modern 750 does but it WILL bite you if you mess up.

I'd suggest a used older gs500.  Look for one that you can get CHEAP to ride, drop (you WILL), learn to control, until you get some time under your belt.

The GS isn't the quickest bike around but it WILL beat most cars and IS quite fun.  Don't get something fast right away to try to keep up with your experienced friends.  That is when most beginners crash... bad.

Please, start small and after a season sell it and get what you want.

i would leave all the Gpz series alone for a first bike, this is where the ninja came from. the Ninja 250/500 are EX's
