I overtightened the oil filter cover nut, and the stud broke.. :( ....What do I do now? Did I really screwed the bike up? for the next time, is there a torque spec that I needed to follow?
Here is what happened, I got the nuts pretty tight, but there were a couple of drops of oil on the floor after an hours of standing, I tried to tightened the three bots, the bottom one snaped....what is the right way of tightening the oil filter cover?
Please help, I am worried sick :o

Thanks, it seemed to work out.....I did find the same topic by searching, I was just to freeked out to search right away :) ..I feel much better now
This time around I just did 1/2 turn past hand tight....it's not leaking so far
just an oil change, but so much trouble :), hopefully it will get easier as I go along
Time for a ide and a little
Fix a broken oil filter cap bolt (http://pantablo500.tripod.com/id10.html)
link on my site...
Thanks.....I just replaced with a screw, seemed to work...we'll see
replace it with a stud in the near future
the reason for studs....
oil cover comes off often....every 3000 miles
if it was a bolt and you monkey fisted it.... you would mess up the threads in the case.
if you monkey fist a nut/stud....you break a $2 stud and you can reuse the nut after you get a new stud
bolt will work but you will have a bad day when the threads pull out of the case

If you put the bike on the center-stand and weight it down so it sits on the back tire, when you pull the oil-filter cover off you will hardly loose any oil...
So... Order or pick up the stud and get the right part in there. :thumb:
They really should have the torque specs in the manual... Well, I didn't see them anyway. Mine just said, "Tighten securely" whatever that means... :dunno:
Bikebandit Oil Filter Schematic (http://houseofmotorcycles.bikebandit.com/partsbandit/oem_schematic_view~mp_id~~mscssid~PQGJBD5AH8AV9NPVR14JVFNXK76J8NPF~schem_dept_id~705465~section_dept_id~1~section_dept_name~OEM+%28Stock%29+Parts~dept_type_id~2~model_dept_year~2001~model_dept_mfr~Suzuki~model_dept_id~703275~model_dept_name~GS500K1.asp)
This is the schematic for the oil filter area. If you want the exact stud, this is a cheap way to get it. Considering the amount of times you'll use it, I wouldn't reccomend using a bolt. I did the same thing the first time i tried to change the oil.
PS (The stud is # 11 in the diagram.)
use a 1/4" ratchet...and you probably won't over tighten it.

Might as well pick up a few... I mean... What's a couple extra bucks vs. needing to order one and WAIT.
I picked up two... Just in case I ate too much spinach before I put the new one in.
Fascinating topic. Thanks to all who contributed.
I didn't see it mentioned and wanted to add to this thread that you will help seal the oil filter cover and help keep that O-ring in the grove by packing that grove with grease -- lithium soap-base is preferred.
Although I have yet to break a bolt (knock on wood), I have struggled with oil leaks that in turn, had me reef on those little cap nuts. Ever since I followed my Clymer bible (see page 68 item "f" ISBN: 0-89287-833-9), I've stopped fearing and now enjoy tightening these little babies.
They have a torque rating? Maybe I just missed it... Mine said, "Tighten Securely" and left it at that.
i safety wire the nuts on...and they don't fall off....
Well, I changed my oil about a week ago and have no leaks (yet)... But, I check every night... I guess I'm a little paranoid about my shoddy work.

Yea. I can't find any specific torgue spec either. Believe
Securely is a 1/4 turn past
Snug. ;)
So... Not two full rotations.
