Just make sure that you're counting your gear shifts correctly.  Remember that you're already in first gear as you take off from a stop.  Your first shift is 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, then 5th, and lastly 6th.  You only shifted 5 times.

Here's a funny story.  We were riding in the Black Hills, and climbing an upward grade.  My wife pulls over and says that her motorcycle won't go into 5th gear.  I took it for a spin, and came back and said, "it certainly does go into 5th".  That's when my brother, who was riding behind her said, "she isn't down shifting as she approaches a hill".  Then she said, "Yes, higher gears means more power".

1 down 5 up... are you starting in first or second?

down for first, up for 2-6

one of my friends thought the same thing, we were riding four wheelers and we were gonna drag race.  So we stopped and then took of and he shifted his as fast as he could casue he thought it would accelerate faster, he lost.

Well, I guess the wife is not the brightest bulb in the pack.  What does that say for me...I married her.  A least one of the fruits of her groin, is pretty smart.  Maybe cause she's also the fruit of my loin.  Yesterday my daughter and I rode about 160 miles together.  I gave her the GS, and she's been riding about 7 weeks.  She sticks to me like glue.  I briefly took it up to 90 mph, and she was there.  I did 100 mph, and she was there again.  At the next stop she said, "I was doing 105, and I've never done that even with my car".  I asked her if she was scared, and she said, "Not until I hit the series of little bumps in the road".  She had her head down behind the windscreen, and was probably bouncing her helment chin bar off the tank.
