Title: Fork tube question?
Post by: BigTwin on June 16, 2005, 09:14:24 AM
Anybody know where I can pick up some fairly inexpensive front forks for my 01 GS?

I wrecked my bike and it bent the front forks up pretty good, are there any easy front end swaps?

I did a write up in the FAQ section on installing a Kat FE on a GS. I have one that I will be selling.

Hell, if you're selling it, what all would it come with and could I just bolt everything on and go. Or would I have to fabricate any parts. I have no power tools to make parts so if it's coming as a whole I'd be really interested.

If I were to buy this, the 01+ CF Tail, and possibly wheels what kind of $$$$$ are we looking at?

THANKS, BigTwin

Well I looked on ebay and found a complete front end froma 94, would that work on my 01? And how worried should I be about buying forks on ebay?

It would not be just a bolt and go. A different steering stop woulld need to be made. I do not have the time anymore to fab one.

I think when I looked at Dgyvers bike ... I mentally noted ...
Spacers, fork stops and a small adaptation for the steering/ignition lock ... weld a little stub on top of the stock locking receiver bracket ...
Cool.

Does anyone know if the stock forks and front suspension is the same on a 1996 as my 2001 GS?

I have a chance to get a pair from another member and was wondering if it would work?

I think they're all the same... Some have those little plastic guards and different end caps but the important parts haven't changed.

So some from an 04 should fit perfectly on my 01?

I think the caliper is different but mounts the same way... I'll bring my '04 to the pony friday and you can check it out.. I know the cap on the top of the fork is different but that's just cosmetic...

Some of the caps are recessed and need a ratchet extension to remove, the '04 has a raised bolt lookin' thing...

What time you planning on being at the pony, cause we close at 8:00 and I usually leave around 9:00 after checking out the new bikes.

I'll just look for one sweet looking GS.

Well does anybody know (100% sure) if the front forks off a 96 GS500 would directly bolt on to my 2001 GS500?

I wrecked my bike and another member might sell them to me.

See this thread (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7150), where someone went the other way (they installed 2001 forks on their 1991 bike).

Well that is GREAT, I will be buying these forks, and I should have my bike working by the end of summer (hopefully).

Ron ayers website has diagrams and part numbers for both forks... After we talked the other night I looked them up, the '04 lower has a different part number but I think it's because of the reflector mounting tab. I'm sure if you look up the part number for the '96 and the '00 fork, lower and maybe the axle you'll find they're close enough..  Go for it!

They're from an '89 model... They look good and have a good riding position but there is a clearance problem...

Take a look at this thread

Does anybody know if the ones from an 89 will work? The reason I ask is because of the different bar set-up (clip-ons).

I think the '89 forks had a different caliper.
