Title: Wrecked last night.......
Post by: gazingwa on June 17, 2005, 04:41:28 AM
.... in a company truck.  7 car expressway pile-up, makes you wonder what if I was riding.  Would I have manuvered out of it? would i have stopped in time, would i have been rear ended?  I don't think I'd come out in one piece in the bike...  oh well, lucky i was enclosed in 3 tons of steel.  Now I'm here at work waiting for the conversation with the boss :o

The guy 2 cars in front of me stopped, 2nd hit him, I shortened the 2nd's car by 2 feet (amazing what a dually f350 with a 4000lb trailer will do)  dented my bumper.  Then more accidents followed behind me.

Yikes man.. I am glad you in a F350!!!!  Not much you can do in that kind of situation.  I mean where were you to go to get out of it?

Hope the Boss treated you OK.

Yeah.. makes me mad.. my first accident because some guy decided to go from 60 to zero on the expressway for no aparent reason (claims there was traffic ahead, but there were no cars for a tenth of a mile at least..  I'm glad no bikers were involved.

I used to drive a big, ugly (UGLY) F350 with a 14' box, diamond plate bumbers.....
Idiots in small cars would cut me off all the time.

Mass = might = right

Not, true, but never, never argue the point.......

Good to hear you're OK.   Hopefully the boss will go easy.  :cheers:

Gotta keep lots and lots of following distance.  It gives you screw-around-time, which is essential.  I always follow at a distance which will allow me to come to a safe stop, even if the car in front of me defys the laws of physics and stops instantly.  I keep about 7 seconds distance in a 52k lb. tandem dump truck, about 4-5 seconds in a car.

More is ALWAYS better!  Especially in states where a rear-end collision is automatically the fault of the driver who rearended the other.  :thumb:

Size doesn't mean anything to most cagers.   They all want to become a Mackwitch (TM)

Well... both bosses were really good about it, one lectured a little bit but understood.  I was rather suprised how well they took it.  I would have liked to have more distance but it was rush hour on the 76 77 8 interchange.  Scott will agree, there is no such thing as distance then.  the truck was 1 year old, the guys at worked fixed it, just waiting on a bumper.

I'm glad I was coming back, I had just dropped off 9000lbs of equipment.  I generally don't deliver but they asked me to work late and help out.... a lotta good that did my wallet.  Oh well... lesson learned.

Sorry to hear about this, you need to leave a big gap and if the car behind is close then leave an even bigger gap.

Thanks, but I know how much gap I need, been pulling trailers full of equipment around for 4 years now.  At that time of day it wasn't going to happen, i'd slow down.. more would cut in front... drivers n akron are asses, in fact the guy i hit i saw 3 minutes before swerving in and ount and cutting 3 or 4 people off.  I think he pissed the first car off and the old man brake checked him, not thinking about the 7 other cars behind that.  when a 3000lb car locks their brakes up on the expressway... nothing a 9000lb rig can do but kiss their ass(really freakin hard).  I got it down from 60 to under 20... so i had quite a bit of room... what i thought was reasonable

bummer :( That following distance thing has gone the way of the do-do... every time you get far enough behind someone ppl end up gettin in front of you... no-win situation!
