Title: How do you keep your hands dry?
Post by: mp183 on June 17, 2005, 05:38:54 PM
Went on a 350+ mile ride yesterday.  NJ, NY, Conn., Mass & Vermont.
Rode about 5 hours in the rain.  Three hours were in a monsoon.
Alpinestar boots were great.  First Grear rainsuit was pretty good.  Olympia golves with waterpoof liner failed.  It was on the chilly side but warm enough so it did not matter.  Any suggestions?
Thinking of getting seal skinz.

On a positive note the V-Strom650 was flawless.  Very stable in the rain.
First time I rode it in such heavy rain.
I have ridden the GS in heavy rain and it's pretty good also.
The fairing on the V-Strom is a big plus.

first gear gloves, with polypro liners, the hands stay warm with wet gloves, if I am going to be out in the wet for a couple hours then I'll bring a spare pair and swap after a rest stop somewhare.

Going to try the seal skinz.
Will let you guys know how it turns out.
Rubber gloves are painful after an hour or so.
Gloves with liners leak after an hour or so in heavy rain.

There are also the Triple Digit Rain Covers, $47 from Aerostich:

They are made from laminated rip-stop nylon.

So-far, I've been wearing my winter gloves (Tourmaster Cold Front), and have never gotten wet inside them... except that they are too hot for summer riding.  Because I had a good experience with the Cold Front gloves, I've been thinking of getting some Alpinestars Jet Road Gore-Tex gloves:

...but it sounds like you had a bad experience with lined gloves, so that probably doesn't interest you.

On a recommendation from Kerry (I think) I picked up a pair of these, in extra large (to fit over my Helds):

Outdoor Research Snowline Shell Mitts

I couldn't ride in them, though -- I didn't feel quite in control of my bike.  Scary feeling.

Hmmm.  The OR mittens I used over my gloves were windproof but not waterproof.  In the picture these units seem to have shiny material on the palms.  Mine were the same flat-colored material throughout.

But hey, I'm game.  Care to sell them?  Mine don't have a gauntlet.

I second that.  Even in torrential down pours, they really do hold up.

That too!  It's not pretty but it works.  And it they don't take up very much room to pack.
