Title: Hesitation just off idle...
Post by: Michael on June 24, 2005, 10:56:52 AM
What's likely here?  Just lately, when I stop at the lights and sit at idle a short while (seconds to a minute or so), when I try to take off again the bike threatens to die (and did once) unless I get it up over 4000 rpm and slip the clutch.  This is new.  usually it takes off clean.  Any tips on where to start diagnosing this would be appreciated.

Does it hesitate only under load, or when you are in neutral too?

The only thing that comes to mind is a rich mixture, but I'm not sure how that would happen all of a sudden.

nice sig, btw.

The thing is, it spins so freely in neutral it's hard to get it to falter.  i guess the answer to your question is I've only noticed it taking off from stopped.
Yes, the sig. is a reminder that life is not about safety at all costs, and to truly live there must be some risk.

Check and see what color your plugs are, I bet it is in the carb somewhere... may need cleaned out... also check your air filter, is it cloged?

actually i kinda get the same problem but that's only after it's warmed up and idles at about 1,500rpm.  i just got the carbs cleaned and a tune up and stuff about a month ago and it's been doing it still ever since.  dunno what it could be...

Where did you get your tune up? Were your carbs rebuilt or just cleaned?

Check your plugs for mixture issues and your float level. All that is from Kerry's site. What would we do without all that info?

No response to cleaning the air filter.  Revs fine in neutral, only does the bad thing under load.  Takes off OK with revs over 3000, whereas usually I can slide off from the lights with minimal clutch slip from anywhere over 1500.  (The advantage of the V&H advancer).  So I guess I'm gonna hafta pull the carbs down.  Bugger!

check your float levels first,  a high float can give a false rich mixture in a low vacuum condition.

Have you taken a look at your plugs yet?

It might be wise to replace them if you haven't for a while. It made a huge difference for me.

Plugs replaced about 1000 km ago.
Now the weird part.  Tonight the air temperature was back in double digits (centigrade) after being at or below freezing the last several nights.  And the bike pulled and ran fine!  :?
I haven't sat down to nut that one out but on the face of it that seems counterintuitive.
